The Gout & Uric Acid Education Society (GUAES) is committed to raising public awareness about gout and arming health care professionals, like you, with resources to share with patients and the most up-to-date information about gout diagnosis and treatment.

Encourage your patients to take advantage of the remaining summer days - and to avoid gout flares - by exercising regularly and staying hydrated. Adults should engage in moderate-intensity physical activities for at least 30 minutes most days of the week.
Remind your patients that as they are physically active, it is important to stay hydrated. Many dieticians recommend consuming at least 64 ounces of water daily, and more if the patient is increasing the intensity of their exercise. While water helps the body regulate body temperature and cushion joints and tissues, some experts also believe that drinking water can help remove uric acid from the bloodstream - minimizing a patient's risk for gout.

Prevent and Minimize Future Gout Flares in Patients
Some of your patients may be enjoying the warmer weather and outdoor activities by increasing their consumption of beer. However, alcoholic beverages - particularly beer - have been linked to gout flares. While people who don't drink beer can still get gout, studies have shown that those who do drink beer are more likely to suffer from flares.
