The Gout & Uric Acid Education Society (GUAES) is committed to raising public awareness about gout and arming health care professionals, like you, with resources to share with patients and the most up-to-date information about gout diagnosis and treatment. This month, we encourage you to help acknowledge Men's Health Month by providing information and resources about gout to your male patients . Though gout can affect anyone at any time, it is more common among men over the age of 40. Along with gender, other risk factors of the disease include hyperuricemia, genetics, obesity, diabetes, renal disease, and a diet high in fructose. While gout cannot be cured, it can be better managed - and even completely controlled - through a proper treatment plan. By taking the right steps - including monitoring and controlling their uric acid levels - many people with gout can control their painful symptoms and maintain a normal lifestyle. Health care professionals are encouraged to work with their patients to find a treatment plan that's right for them.

"Go for 6" Gout Awareness Day Results
Last month, we introduced the new "Go for 6" campaign. The campaign encourages patients to work with their physicians to determine their serum uric acid level (sUA), check it every six months and work to keep it below 6.0 mg/dL to reduce the risk of future gout flares and serious long-term health consequences.
Last month, on Gout Awareness Day, the Gout & Uric Acid Education Society partnered with Anthony "Spice" Adams, retired football player and gout sufferer, to help spread awareness about gout diagnosis, treatment and management. Adams, along with Brian Mandell, M.D., GUAES board member, appeared on several local radio and TV news stations to promote the importance of immediate and ongoing treatment for gout.
Visit the new "Go for 6" tab on GoutEducation.org to find more information and resources for your patients. Complimentary print materials can be ordered through the Contact Us form.

Last month, Dr. N. Lawrence Edwards, chairman of GUAES, and Dr. Michael Spira participated in an informational gout webinar, led by Nick Wrathall.
Wrathall, a long-time gout sufferer, shared his story of living with the chronic disease and posed several questions for the panelists to answer in depth.
What is gout, how many people does gout affect, and how gout attacks can be treated when they strike, were just some of the questions Dr. Edwards covered during the webinar. If you didn't get a chance to hear the discussion, you can listen to it here.
