The Gout & Uric Acid Education Society (GUAES) is committed to raising public awareness about gout and arming patients, like you, with resources to help you better understand gout diagnosis and treatment. June is Men's Health Month. Though gout can affect anyone at any time, it is more common in men over the age of 40. Along with gender, other risk factors of the disease include hyperuricemia, genetics, obesity, diabetes, kidney disease, and a diet high in fructose. While gout cannot be cured, it can be better managed - and even completely controlled - through a proper treatment plan. By taking the right steps - including monitoring and controlling their uric acid levels - many people with gout can control their painful symptoms and maintain a normal lifestyle. Patients should work with their doctor to find a treatment plan that's right for them. In addition to taking daily uric-acid lowering medications, making changes to your lifestyle can reduce your risk of developing gout or having a gout attack. For example, men who take daily vitamins appear to be at a lower risk for gout. Regular exercise, maintaining a healthy body weight, and staying hydrated are other important changes to consider.

"Go for Six" Gout Awareness Day Results
Last month, we introduced the new "Go for Six" campaign. The campaign encourages gout sufferers to work with their health care professional to get their uric acid level checked every six months and work to keep it below 6.0 mg/dL to reduce the risk of future gout flares and serious long-term health consequences.
Last month, on Gout Awareness Day, the Gout & Uric Acid Education Society partnered with Anthony "Spice" Adams, retired football player and gout sufferer, to help spread awareness about gout diagnosis, treatment and management. Adams, along with Brian Mandell, M.D., GUAES board member, appeared on several local radio and TV news stations to promote the importance of immediate and ongoing treatment for gout.

Last month, Dr. N. Lawrence Edwards, chairman of GUAES, and Dr. Michael Spira participated in an informational gout webinar, led by Nick Wrathall.
Wrathall, a long-time gout sufferer, shared his story of living with the chronic disease and posed several questions for the panelists to answer in depth.
What is gout, how many people are affected, and how gout attacks can be treated when they strike, were just some of the questions Dr. Edwards covered during the webinar. If you didn't get a chance to hear the discussion, you can listen to it here.
