Gout & Uric Acid Education Society
May 2015 Newsletter

The Gout & Uric Acid Education Society (GUAES) is committed to raising public awareness about gout and arming health care professionals, like you, with resources to share with patients and the most up-to-date information about gout diagnosis and treatment.

As you may have seen in our previous newsletters, we have introduced a series of educational comics to help raise awareness about the severity of gout. In honor of National Arthritis Awareness Month and the upcoming Gout Awareness Day on May 22, this month's featured comic references how gout can affect anyone at any time -- even professional athletes like Anthony "Spice" Adams. Adams is a retired professional football player and gout sufferer. He played for the San Francisco 49ers from 2003-2006, and then signed as an unrestricted free agent to the Chicago Bears from 2007-2011.

The Gout & Uric Acid Education Society amplifies its efforts on Gout Awareness Day - and encourages gout sufferers to seek immediate and ongoing treatment. This year, with the "Go for Six" campaign, GUAES encourages patients to work with their physicians to determine their serum uric acid number and work to keep it below 6.0 mg/dL in order to decrease the likelihood of a gout flare.

Go for Six this May 22 for
Gout Awareness Day

May 22 is National Gout Awareness Day. During this day, the Gout & Uric Acid Education Society amplifies its efforts to call attention to the growing incidence of gout - the most common form of inflammatory arthritis - and promote the

importance of immediate and ongoing treatment for improved outcomes. While gout is a very serious disease, just 10 percent of gout sufferers are being properly treated.

The "Go for Six" campaign encourages patients to work with their physicians to know their serum uric acid number and work to keep it below 6.0 mg/dL to minimize the risk of a gout flare. Visit the new "Go for Six" tab on GoutEducation.org to learn more about the importance of sUA testing.

Tune in to your local radio or TV news station on May 22 to hear from Anthony Adams, retired football player and gout sufferer, and Brian Mandell, M.D., GUAES board member, on gout diagnosis, treatment and management.
