May 22 is National Gout Awareness Day. During this day, the Gout & Uric Acid Education Society amplifies its efforts to call attention to the growing incidence of gout - the most common form of inflammatory arthritis - and promote the
importance of immediate and ongoing treatment for improved outcomes. While gout is a very serious disease, just 10 percent of gout sufferers are being properly treated.
The "Go for Six" campaign encourages patients to work with their physicians to know their serum uric acid number and work to keep it below 6.0 mg/dL to minimize the risk of a gout flare. Visit the new "Go for Six" tab on GoutEducation.org to learn more about the importance of sUA testing.
Tune in to your local radio or TV news station on May 22 to hear from Anthony Adams, retired football player and gout sufferer, and Brian Mandell, M.D., GUAES board member, on gout diagnosis, treatment and management.
