Take a Stand
on Gout
The Gout & Uric Acid Education Society
March 2015 Newsletter

The Gout & Uric Acid Education Society is committed to raising public awareness about gout and arming patients, like you, with resources to help you better understand gout diagnosis and treatment.

As you may have seen in our previous newsletters, we have introduced a series of educational comics to help raise awareness about the severity of gout.

Gout is most dangerous when it is connected with other comorbidities. Gout has been linked to other serious health issues, including hypertension, kidney disease, diabetes and obesity. You can learn more about gout and comorbidities through GoutEducation.org here.

Taking Care of Kidneys During
National Kidney Month

March is National Kidney Month. The kidneys perform vital functions such as filtering waste, but did you know that 1 in 5 gout sufferers will develop kidney stones? Kidney stones are extremely painful and are often composed of uric acid.

They may block the urinary tract and, if left untreated, can result in infection and damage to the kidneys. Hyperuricemia and gout can also be associated with decreased kidney function. If you have kidney disease, it is important to monitor your kidney function.

Learn more about kidney health from the National Kidney Foundation here or visit GoutEducation.org.
