The Gout & Uric Acid Education Society
February 2015 Newsletter

The Gout & Uric Acid Education Society is committed to raising public awareness about gout and arming health care professionals, like you, with resources to share with patients and the most up-to-date information about gout diagnosis and treatment.
February is American Heart Month. Every year, 1 in 4 deaths is caused by heart disease according to the American Heart Association. Heart problems - including high blood pressure, blocked arteries and heart failure - are associated with gout. Hyperuricemia alone is associated with a higher risk of death and complications from these conditions.

Research from the University of Oxford has shown that having gout doubles a person's risk for heart attack and stroke. Additional research published in the Annals of the Rheumatic Diseases has shown that women with gout are 3.5 times as likely to have a heart attack as men.

This February, promote heart health by sharing these resources from the American Heart Association.

Treating gout patients? Join the discussion.

The Gout & Uric Acid Education Society is supporting CreateHealth in its efforts to invite those suffering from gout to join an online educational forum, where they can share their experiences and interact with others who have gout. If you are treating patients with gout, please share this call-to-action.

Through the forum, CreateHealth is interested in learning more about the typical gout patient experience - including what information they received about gout, who provided the information and what has been the most useful. In the survey area, patients can share their opinions, comment on other posts and learn more from experts in gout management.

To get involved, patients can create a temporary account with CreateHealth by clicking here. Contact information will not be shared and will be deleted automatically after the six-month survey period.

Patients can join the discussion here. Thank you for your help.
