Greetings!
The Gout & Uric Acid Education Society is committed to raising public awareness about gout and arming health care professionals, like you, with resources to share with patients and the most up-to-date information about gout, diagnosis and treatment.
As you may have seen in our previous newsletters, we have introduced a series of educational comics to help raise awareness about the severity of gout.
Gouty arthritis most commonly begins in the great toe - but it can move around to affect other joints as well, or may not affect the great toe at all. Other joints that gout commonly affects include the ankle, mid foot, wrist, elbow or small joints of the fingers. In order to stop gout from progressing, many patients will need to be put on uric acid-lowering medication, and will need to make various changes to their diet and lifestyle. If uric acid-lowering medication is not taken regularly, frequency and duration of flares - along with the number of joints affected - will increase.

Test your Patient's Gout Knowledge with New Gout Quiz
The Gout & Uric Acid Education Society has introduced a new interactive and educational quiz.
Found at GoutQuiz.org, the 10-question quiz challenges gout patients and their loved ones to find out how much they really know about gout - including what it is, classic symptoms and risk factors, how a diagnosis is made and steps toward better treatment and management of the disease. Information and educational resources are provided throughout the experience, and at the end, users are encouraged to share their results with family members and friends.
Encourage your patients to test their gout knowledge and learn more at GoutQuiz.org.

World Arthritis Day was celebrated on October 12. With gout being the most common form of inflammatory arthritis, this day helped to bring awareness to the severity of gout, along with the need for patients to receive ongoing treatment.
Dr. Lawrence Edwards, Chairman of the Gout & Uric Acid Education Society, discusses this serious form of arthritis in his World Arthritis Day post here.
