The Gout & Uric Acid Education Society is committed to raising public awareness about gout and arming patients, like you, with resources to help you better understand gout diagnosis and treatment.
July is Juvenile Arthritis Awareness Month. Many gout patients may not know that gout is the most common form of inflammatory arthritis - or that gout can sometimes affect children, teens and other young adults. While it is rare for children to experience gout, if they are showing signs and symptoms, it is important to see a physician for a correct diagnosis and treatment options, as there may be an underlying problem.
Causes of gout in children and teenagers include:
-An inherited condition or disorder that causes the patient to produce extra uric acid, which can lead to gout or kidney stones
-Kidney diseases that result in the patient not being able to process and excrete uric acid
-Being overweight or having high blood pressure, which is becoming more common in young adults
