The Gout & Uric Acid Education Society is committed to raising public awareness about gout and arming patients, like you, with resources to help you better understand gout diagnosis and treatment. As you may have seen in our previous newsletters, we have introduced a series of educational comics to help raise awareness about the severity of gout. In honor of National Nutrition Month, this month's featured comic discusses how eating certain foods -- including shellfish, like lobster -- can trigger painful gout attacks.
If you're suffering from gout, what you eat can play a big role in helping to prevent future attacks and curb high uric acid levels. Because uric acid is formed from the breakdown of purines, low-purine diets are often recommended to help treat conditions like gout, in which excessive uric acid builds up in the tissues of the body. High-purine foods can trigger attacks. Instead, gout sufferers are encouraged to eat more low-purine foods, such as low-fat or non-fat dairy products, fresh vegetables, fresh fruits, nuts and grains.

It is important to make nutritious diet decisions for your overall health. In addition, this can help to avoid a painful gout attack.
ChooseMyPlate.gov offers diet suggestions that can guide you in your healthy and gout-friendly diet decisions during this month and throughout the year.
