The Gout & Uric Acid Education Society is committed to raising public awareness about gout and arming health care professionals, like you, with resources to share with patients and the most up-to-date information about gout diagnosis and treatment.
As you may have seen in our previous newsletters, we have introduced a series of educational comics to help raise awareness about the severity of gout. In honor of National Nutrition Month, this month's featured comic discusses how eating certain foods -- including shellfish, like lobster -- can trigger painful gout attacks.
Because uric acid is formed from the breakdown of purines, many medical professionals recommend low-purine diets for patients suffering from gout. As part of a low-purine diet, patients are encouraged to include more foods such as low-fat or non-fat dairy products, fresh vegetables, fresh fruits, nuts and grains.

While there isn't a regimented gout diet, anyone who is diagnosed with gout should follow a healthy, balanced diet.
It is important to encourage gout patients to make nutritious diet decisions for their overall health, in addition to avoiding a painful gout attack.
ChooseMyPlate.gov offers diet suggestions that can help your patients make healthy and gout-friendly diet decisions during this month and throughout the year.
