The Gout & Uric Acid Education Society is committed to raising public awareness about gout and arming health care professionals, like you, with resources to share with patients and the most up-to-date information about gout diagnosis and treatment.
As you may have seen in our previous newsletters, we have introduced a series of educational comics to help raise awareness about the severity of gout.
While the Super Bowl may be over, the pain is not for millions of gout sufferers nationwide. As a doctor, you may see patients who are relatively healthy, but have excruciating gout arthritis pain in a joint. Because risk factors such as family history and other health issues play a role in gout development, gout can affect anyone at any time -- even professional athletes.

Gout & Heart Health
February is American Heart Month. Because gout is connected to serious health issues, like heart disease, it's important to encourage gout patients to take heart-healthy steps to help reduce painful attacks.
Elevated uric acid levels have been linked to issues such as cardiovascular disease, hypertension, kidney disease and obesity -- and studies are underway to determine if uric acid has a direct role in causing these disorders. Encourage patients, who have or who are at risk for gout, to have their uric acid levels checked regularly.
