Gout & Uric Acid Education Society
October 2013 Newsletter

Greetings!

The Gout & Uric Acid Education Society is committed to raising public awareness about gout and arming patients, like you, with resources to help you better understand gout diagnosis and treatment.

As you may have seen in our September newsletter, we have introduced a series of educational comics to help raise awareness about the severity of gout.

This October, many people may enjoy the German tradition of Oktoberfest with a pint or two of their favorite beer. Unknowingly, they may be putting themselves at risk for a painful flare of gout. Consumption of alcohol -- specifically beer -- has high levels of purines that can trigger an attack.
Gout & Beer
Gout most commonly affects the big toe. While people who don't drink beer can still suffer from gout, studies have shown that those who do drink beer are more likely to have attacks.

Stay tuned for the November newsletter when another comic will educate on gout and debunk common gout myths.
