Installation of the 27th Presiding Bishop,

The Bishop's Blog: Signs of God's Grace
Episcopalians, evangelism and Presiding Bishop Michael Curry

Presiding Bishop Michael Curry

It was an imagined Jeopardy question, posed by the Most Rev. Michael Curry in his remarkable sermon on Sunday, when he was installed as the 27th Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church. "Name two words that begin with E that are never used at the same time". Answer: Evangelism and Episcopalians.

I remember another sermon by another bishop colleague who said that for Episcopalians evangelism tends to involve bringing a small aquarium filled with water down to the beach and waiting for the fish to jump in. A passive enterprise in this bishop's example, or an absent one, in Presiding Bishop Curry's.

Presiding Bishop Curry went on to outline a way of evangelism that is congruent with our rich Anglican tradition, and that is also aligned with the Gospel: "A way of evangelism that is as much about listening and learning from the story of who God is in another person's life as it is about sharing our own story... A way of evangelism that is really about helping others find their way to a relationship with God without trying to control the outcome." (Italics mine.) "A way of evangelism that is authentic to us." Read more.

Filmed at the Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine in New York City, Presiding Bishop Curry continues, "Now is our time to go. To go into the world, let the world know that there is a God who loves us, a God who will not let us go, and that that love can set us all free." Go to the video and transcript

St. Alban's reinvigorates outreach ministry
by inviting members to share their passions

St. Alban_s_ Oakland_Franklin Lakes It's hard to say, "That ministry has run its course here and it is time to let others take it up while we move on to different ministries." To support this transition, as well as to help people claim as ministry the causes they are involved in outside the "umbrella" of church, St. Alban's in Oakland/Franklin Lakes encourages members to "put a face" on their causes by telling their stories, sharing their experiences and passions, and inviting others to participate. Serving God in God's church - Is God calling you?
At convention, elections will be held for a variety of diocesan offices through a self-nominating process. If you haven't served in the past, perhaps this is the time to consider doing so.

The committees are unique ministries within the diocese and offer opportunities to serve and support congregations in their development and transformation, to develop relationships with people from other congregations and to engage in issues of justice and inclusion. A list of committees that are seeking qualified candidates and the qualifications of nominees to elected offices is available here.

Nominations may be made on-line no later than 12 noon on Friday, December 4 in order to be assured inclusion in the pre-Convention packets given to deputies. Go to the nomination form.
