The Bishop's Blog: Signs of God's Grace
The center is found at the edge
Posted by the Rt. Rev. Mark Beckwith on March 4, 2015

The center is found at the edge Over and over again, Jesus went to the edge. Immediately after his baptism, he was driven to the edge - into the wilderness, where he spent forty days and nights. While at the edge, he rediscovered the center - which for him was God.

And thereafter, throughout his three year ministry, Jesus sought out people who were likewise driven to the edge; and in many cases were cast over the edge - tax collectors, prostitutes, lepers, the blind and the lame, people who were poor. He sought them out - and brought them into the center; into the beloved community. Read more.

"Caring Community" of St. Luke's, Montclair models successful inreach
By Susan Singer
Susan Singer
Imagine that you are living alone, active, and fiercely independent. Imagine further that one fine winter day you take a bad fall on the ice, and end up with a painful injury. The long-range prognosis is good, but for the next several months you cannot drive, stoop or lift anything over ten pounds. You can't drive yourself to a medical appointment. You can't hop over to the pharmacy to pick up a prescription. You can't even pick up a grocery bag. Literally overnight you have been deprived of the social interaction that comes with your job or your charitable work. You may feel lonely or vulnerable. And, just when you most need the spiritual lift of church, you can't even get to services on your own.

It was such "real life" experiences which led a small group of parishioners at St. Luke's Church in Montclair to form a new ministry: the Caring Community. Our Caring Community aims to lend practical support, provided by volunteers within our congregation, to fellow parishioners suffering from illness or injury. Read more.

Use "If This, Then That" service to simplify
social media updates

If Then Posted by Nina Nicholson on March 5, 2015

Keeping a church website up to date is a lot of work, and keeping your church's social media in sync with your website posts can be a tedious chore. I've recently started using a free web-based service that simplifies sharing new website content to the diocesan social media: IFTTT.com.

IFTTT (pronounced "ift") is an acronym for "If This, Then That." IFTTT users can create simple conditional statements, called "recipes," which are triggered based on changes to web services, called "channels," such as Facebook, Twitter and RSS feeds. The recipes respond to a trigger in one channel by performing a designated action in a different channel. Read more.

Electronic giving option available to congregations

At the Annual Diocesan Convention, diocesan CFO Paul Shackford announced that an ad hoc committee, chaired by Trustee Dan Austin, had concluded its research into efficient and cost-effective ways that congregations can electronically accept pledge and other donations. Based on a review a number of vendors, the diocese recommends Vanco Payment Solutions. While no congregation is required to use Vanco, the committee feels that it offers the best combination of options, reports, simplicity, technical support, and low cost to our congregations.

Vanco is offering to waive the $50 set up fee for churches who sign up before July 31, 2015.

The diocesan staff plans to use the system for donations and event registration payments. Several staff members participated in training and have begun to use the system in a test mode.

Churches interested in the electronic giving can contact Paul Shackford at pshackford@dioceseofnewark.org or 973-430-9983 for additional program information.

Engaging the World
Opportunity to join second cycle of Going Local

One way to discover what God is up to in our communities is to join with others in Going Local. Going Local is a process through which we learn new habits, practices, attitudes and values that help us discern, name and test out what God is up to. During Convention we heard stories from five participants and how their lives, congregations, and ministries are being transformed through the process.

The second cycle of Going Local is scheduled to begin after Easter (date to be announced). The deadline to apply for funding for congregational or clergy participation in Going Local has been extended to March 15 and will be funded from gifts given to support the ministry of the Bishop.

Names for the 2015 ECW Book of Remembrance due March 31

The Book of Remembrance is a memorial book in which the names of deceased women in the Diocese are inscribed. All baptized women of the Episcopal Church are eligible to be remembered in this way. The memorial book is presented at the World of Women Luncheon in May. The inscription in the Book of Remembrance costs $10.00 per name.

It is customary whenever a name is inscribed in this book to make an additional contribution to the Mary G. Rankin Scholarship Fund in the name of the deceased person. The fund was established in 1980 in memory of this former ECW treasurer. Please be generous in helping the youth of our diocese going to college.

Please use this form and submit names by March 31, 2015.
