The Invitation of Taizé

The Taizé community, named for the French town where the international and ecumenical monastic community began nearly 75 years ago, is known for its repetitive, chant-like music. It is also known for gathering thousands of people from all over the world to live in a community of prayer. (There were about 3700 pilgrims there during the same week as our diocesan group of nine young adults and four more seasoned adults.) But what stood out most for me during our week was the continuous invitation. The invitation to join with God in prayer - in song and in silence. The invitation to offer respect to one another - honoring all the linguistic, ethnic, religious and racial diversity that shows up every week. The invitation to be in deep communion with the living Christ. Read more.

Join me in offering blessings on the anniversary of 9/11
In the spirit of invitation, I am going to offer blessings on Thursday, September 11 at Newark Penn Station, the soup kitchen at St. John's Church next door to our offices - and at the newly refurbished Military Park, where our Cathedral is located. I invite you to join me in offering blessings in your own community on the day which has become an unofficial day of remembrance. Episcopal House will provide some prayer resources for you (they will go up on our web site by the beginning of September).

I invite you to join in the work that God is already up to.

Facebook Like vs. Share
"Geeks for God" Blog
Facebook buttons decoded: "Like" is nice, but "Share" is stronger
Posted by John Rollins on August 5, 2014

If you've ever wondered what is the difference between the Facebook "Like" and "Share" buttons, you are not alone. Google the question and you will find hundreds of responses.

In the simplest terms, stated on Facebook's Help pages, the difference is this: "Like" lets you share a link on your Timeline and News Feed in one click. "Share" lets you comment on the link and choose the target audience. "Share" is the more powerful of the two. Read more.

"Stepping Stones" workshop enriches participants
By Martha Reiner

The summer evening workshop Stepping Stones: Finding meaning in your life story was "A wonderful opportunity to share our faith journey and be supportive in faith, hope and love," said one of the 30 participants, while others requested more such events.

Sponsored by the Empowering People Action Team of Diocesan Council, the Stepping Stones workshop took place last Wednesday, July 30, at St Agnes' Church in Little Falls.

After joining in the fellowship of a light supper, the workshop participants took part in a facilitated program led by the Rev. Mark Waldon & Rosemary Wright, PhD. Waldon and Wright co-lead an Education for Ministry (EfM) program at the Convent of St. John Baptist in Mendham.

Beginning in small groups, the participants shared a significant step in their spiritual journey to date and, through successively larger groups, the sharing deepened until the evening ended with everyone working together to create this following Collect:

Dear God, maker of all holy places and inspiration for all holy objects. You give us unexpected answers and guide us down Your paths. We pray that we will hear You when You give us opportunities that take us out of darkness into Your light, so that we carry our faith into the world, according to Your will, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

"Science and God" Summer Program at Holy Trinity in West Orange
By Peter Jackson

Holy Trinity in West Orange recently offered a unique summer program for children: "Science and God," led by Holy Trinity's Priest-in-Charge, the Rev. Miguel A. Hernandez, who is also a telecommunications engineer.

The program was held on Saturday mornings in July, with the first meeting taking place on July 5. We thought that turnout would be only a few students. However, nine children showed up on the first day, and the group soon grew to 15. Read more.

Philadelphia 11 ordinations marked with calls for continued justice work
Episcopal News Service - July 28, 2014
Some of the Philadelpia 11 with the Presiding Bishop

The Rev. Sandye Wilson, rector of St. Andrew & Holy Communion in South Orange, is quoted in this article.

A joyous celebration of the 40th anniversary of women's priestly ordination on July 26 here included calls for people to realize that the dream of a more egalitarian and less patriarchal Episcopal Church - and society - that was embodied by the Philadelphia 11s ordinations requires much more work.

"I wonder why we cannot speed up the work of gender justice and aligned oppressions in the days and years ahead," Fredrica Thompsett Harris, Mary Wolfe Professor Emerita of Historical Theology at Episcopal Divinity School, asked during her keynote address to a symposium that kicked off a day meant to celebrate the July 29, 1974, ordinations of 11 women deacons at Church of the Advocate here. "This would be one way to honor our courageous sisters and those who stood with them."

The Rev. Merrill Bittner, the Rev. Alison Cheek, the Rev. Alla Bozarth, the Rev. Emily C. Hewitt, the Rev. Carter Heyward, the Rev. Suzanne R. Hiatt, the Rev. Marie Moorefield, the Rev. Jeanette Piccard, the Rev. Betty Bone Schiess, the Rev. Katrina Welles Swanson and the Rev. Nancy Hatch Wittig were ordained on that day in 1974, slightly more than two years before the General Convention of the Episcopal Church gave its explicit permission for women to become priests.  Read more

News from The Episcopal Church
Joint Nominating Committee presents last of three essays

The Joint Nominating Committee for the Election of the Presiding Bishop (JNCPB) continues its work to prepare The Episcopal Church for the election of the 27th Presiding Bishop at General Convention next summer. The Committee published the third of three essays designed to begin a discussion about the election which will take place in the summer of 2015.

This essay discuss how the constitutional/canonical role of the office has changed and evolved from being the senior bishop by consecration who presides over meetings of the House of Bishops to the complex multifaceted position it is today. The first essay described the basic time-line and steps of the nominating and election process (here). The second essay outlined the current roles, functions, and responsibilities of the Presiding Bishop (here).

It is the hope of the Joint Nominating Committee for the Election of the Presiding Bishop that all members of General Convention and all Episcopalians will take the time to read these brief essays to learn the importance of what we will do next summer. Should you have any questions or comments about these essays or the work of the Joint Nominating Committee for the Election of the Presiding Bishop please contact pbnominatingcommittee@gmail.com.

The JNCPB is comprised of a lay member, a priest or deacon, and a bishop elected from each of the nine provinces of the Episcopal Church, plus two youth representatives, appointed by the President of the House of Deputies. The General Convention Deputies and bishops serve a three-year term to conclude at the close of General Convention 2015 in Salt Lake City, UT (Diocese of Utah).
