Bring Back Our Girls

The French are fond of saying, "The more things change, the more they stay the same." Nearly 2000 years ago, the outraged Herod summarily ordered the execution of all two-year old male children in Bethlehem (Matthew 2:16). The daughters of Rachel wept for their children "because they were no more." This past week, cries of anguish were again heard, this time in Nigeria. It was the wailing of the mothers of 247 girls kidnapped and destined to be sold into slavery by the Boko Haram. Read more.

Bishop Mark Beckwith will preside; the guest preacher will be the Rev. Harry Knox, President & CEO of the Religious Coalition for Reproductive Choice. Find out more.

A conversation with Judy Shepard, mother of Matthew Shepard

Judy Shepard On Saturday, June 21, The OASIS will sponsor a forum with LGBT-rights advocate Judy Shepard. She is the mother of Matthew Shepard, whose 1998 murder in Wyoming arguably triggered a change in the way America thinks about gay people.

Shepard will speak about her son's death, its effect on her family, and their evolution into advocate-allies of the LGBT community.

The forum will take place at St. Luke's in Montclair at 5 p.m. A Q&A session and reception will follow. Find out more.

 

Senior Ministries Evensong & Hegg Awards

On Sunday, June 22, all are invited to join Bishop Beckwith and Senior Ministries of the Diocese of Newark for the 18th Annual Senior Ministries Evensong and the presentation of the David P. Hegg II Lifetime Achievement Awards, at Christ Church in East Orange. A reception will be held at 3 p.m. with the Evensong following at 4 p.m. Bishop Beckwith will preach. An evening exploring justice opportunities

An evening exploring justice opportunities Have you been meaning to get more involved in justice issues? Are you looking for ways to act or "Do" more about the issues that keep you up at night?

The diocesan Justice Board has identified three main areas of focus: Gun Violence, Human Trafficking and Child Poverty. Join us for an evening exploring these three topics with area experts involved in the work, on Tuesday, June 24 at Grace Church in Madison. Register by Monday, June 16. Find out more.
