Greetings!

Is Berkeley Getting More Efficient?

Kudos to Citywide Contract Administrators!

City staff is getting more efficient!  Contracts are being signed much more timely than they were last time we checked.  See Citywide Contracts Review  on the 10/6/15 Council Agenda. We recommended better training, improved guidance, and increased monitoring. Finance agrees and is taking action.  See Berkeleyside for more.
Kudos to the Police Dept!
Since we issued Injury Prevention: Better Investigation and Data Use will Help the Berkeley Police Department and the City, the Police Department and Human Resources have made great strides in safety by implementing all of our recommendations.  See management's final report on the 10/13/15 Council Information Calendar

Interested in a Career as a Performance Auditor?

The Auditor's Office will be recruiting in January 2016

Do you want to make a difference in improving City operations?  The City Auditor's Office is a catalyst for improving City government and will be looking for someone who wants a challenging and rewarding career in our Performance Audits division.  We'll be recruiting at the Auditor II level in January with later opportunity for promotion to Senior Auditor: see information about both positions at: http://www.ci.berkeley.ca.us/hr/

Coming Soon:

  • Refuse Billing- Is the City billing customers correctly? Are there opportunities to improve service delivery?
  • Human Resources Department Hiring Practices- Is the City's hiring and promotional system merit-based? Are we following Equal Employment Opportunity laws as well as merit-based (civil service) requirements?

Also on this year's plan:

  • Community Agencies: performance, equity, and accountability for City grants- Are performance outcomes in line with 2020 Vision for Berkeley's Children & Youth goals?
  • Payroll- Are internal controls over payroll working effectively?  This audit must be contracted out to meet the U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) updated Standards for performance auditor independence.  We will issue a request for proposals this fall.

Ask us a question - send us advice - and consider a career in making Berkeley better

Thank you for your continued support for our work to help Berkeley deliver services in a more efficient, effective, and equitable way.  Please contact me at [email protected]  (or at 981-6750) with your questions, comments, and ideas for the audit plan.  I'm always happy to hear from folks who want to get more involved, and especially from anyone considering a career as a performance auditor.

For the positions we'll be recruiting for soon, and even for the next elected City Auditor, we look for analytical thinkers with public policy/public service interests and experience, who can successfully and objectively communicate complex issues to a diverse audience.  I look forward to hearing from you.

Sincerely,

Ann-Marie Hogan, City Auditor
City of Berkeley
