What Will Keep Your Church Alive?
Rev. Dale Stohre

What will keep your church alive?

I love hearing about churches full of energy, vision, and confidence. That describes my church home, and I hope yours: God's beloved gatherings of talented workers, committed leaders, great pastors, and you, of course.

A lot of that strength is home-grown -- we UCC'ers have an independent streak; nobody tells us what to do. I like it that way. UCC or not, I've always been in churches where we can be entrepreneurs, unleashing our creativity and putting good ideas to work, keeping our church alive while being our authentic selves, and no one's carbon copy.

It's just that thriving, not merely surviving, is a team sport.

Pull an ember from a fire, and it cools quickly. One log makes for a cold fireplace. But when its energy is joined by two...five...or ten...  Our church consists of the varied flame of everyone there, adding their warmth to ours. I can't imagine life without my family -- my wife, kids, grandkids, aunts, uncles-adding their warmth and companionship. My faith family's a lot like that.

"Now you are the body of Christ, and individually members of it." (from 1 Cor. 12)

We're actually inter-dependent. We didn't build the roads we ride or the cars we drive; we didn't build the schools or train the teachers who taught us; nor did we birth ourselves -- we enter this world indebted to others, and that never changes.

"To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good..."

And to us has been given our United Church of Christ, burning brightly with the flames of those over the centuries whose flames flare within us. A lot of those "embers" are gathering soon, representing us at General Synod 30. Join me in praying for that gathering, where new fires of the Spirit and new hope for a thriving church will blaze.

What will keep your church alive? The shared fire of our whole church.

Annual Meeting Wrap Up
The 2015 Annual Meeting was a wonderful experience chock full of spiritual depth woven around the theme "Courage in the Struggle." The Rev. Ben Guess, Executive Minister for Local Church Ministries, gave a stirring address anchored by the UCC tagline: Be the Church. Our featured guest was the Rev. Eric Elnes, host and producer of Darkwood Brew (a groundbreaking interactive web television program) and pastor of Countryside Community Church UCC in Omaha, Nebraska. Eric invited us to reflect on the way God's Spirit prompts to grow and change, particularly through the dark chapters of our lives. Highlights from this year's Annual Meeting include: the Installation of the Rev. Franz Rigert as new Conference Minister, jazz pianist Chuck Marohnic performing with our very own vocalist Tisha Brown, the unanimous approval of our 2016 budget, and some incredible workshops and exhibits. The meals and social time allowed for lots of reunions and stirred new friendships!

There will be some videos from Annual Meeting available at a later date.

Church Spotlight

 Namekagon Congregational Church

This small church is in the Northwest Association and is served by Pastor Sharon Osborn. The address is given as Springbrook, but it's actually in the small unincorporated town of Earl, near the beautiful Namekagon River. Founding members of this church are ancestors of Wisconsin Conference staff member and newsletter editor Nola Risse-Connolly.

Is your church considering an Open and Affirming Process? The Wisconsin Conference has a committee to help!  Please feel free to use us as resources for your discussions and preparations.
