Lisa Hart Looking at Life Through God's Lens
by Lisa Hart

I recently returned from moving my youngest child to UCLA to begin her freshman year of college. UCLA is a beautiful campus, with lots of hills and stairs to climb. While the students will never be able to claim that they walked uphill in snow and ice to and from class, they can honestly claim to walk uphill both to and from class.

During my time on campus, I became aware of my tendency to look at things through the lens of my personal experience. I found myself wondering how Kati would handle the long walks to class once it was cold, and what it would be like to walk the hills and the stairs once it was icy. Almost as soon as I had those thoughts I would laugh at myself, realizing that those are conditions she will not have to deal with. The ice and the cold are my realities here in Wisconsin, but her reality in California will be much different.

Is your congregation ready for something new? Do you believe that your church has the potential for revitalization, if only you knew what to do? The key to growing a church is to build relationships with people in your community by offering a genuine welcome to your congregation. Many of us have forgotten the simple, practical ways that members reach out to new people that used to be a natural part of church life. In this workshop, you'll learn how to turn your hopes and good intentions into action through planning, teamwork, and fun.

This church in the Southeast Association was founded in 1862 and used to meet in the first brick and stone building in Wisconsin. Now, the congregation meets in a new building that opened in 2008, after a tragic fire in late 2005. The church's pastor is Rev. Jim Gorman.

Is your church considering an Open and Affirming Process? The Wisconsin Conference has a committee to help!  Please feel free to use us as resources for your discussions and preparations.
