I write this on Monday morning, the day after Easter, so the images of the past week are fresh in my mind. When I preached regularly, I could count on facing the temptation to present Easter as a corrective to the events of Good Friday. I liked the idea of announcing that Easter morning was the happily-ever-after ending to what had looked like very bad news during Holy Week--just like in the movies! I very much wanted to assure people that Easter Sunday erased the pain and shame of Good Friday. But Friday doesn't go away. The good news of Monday morning is that while Friday will come around again, Sunday is always ahead of us.

Friend of the Court Brief - Clergy Housing Allowance Case
From Scott Anderson, Wisconsin Council of Churches

Today the Church Alliance, a coalition of more than 30 major religious denominations, filed an amicus curiae brief with the Seventh Circuit of the U.S. Court of Appeals in support of the Defendants-Appellants in the clergy housing allowance lawsuit.  The Wisconsin Council of Churches is listed, along with several dozen other groups, including the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, as additional amici.

You may recall that the Federal District Court in Madison ruled last November that the tax deductibility of the clergy housing allowance is unconstitutional. The federal government filed its Defendant-Appellant brief in support of constitutionality two weeks ago with the Seventh Circuit. Amicus briefs are due today [4/9/2014].

We anticipate a ruling from the court within a year. The case will likely then be appealed by the losing party to the U.S. Supreme Court.
