We're very fortunate to have such strong community support.
Whether you donate, volunteer, or support our mission in other ways, we couldn't do all we do without you!
We're grateful to the individuals and the businesses that contribute to our cause.
Right now, the Great Harvest Bread Company in Cedar Rapids is partnering with us on their Honey Bunnies for Easter. For every Honey Bunny sold, the bakery will donate $2 to help our animals.
Our volunteers will be working with the bakery staff over Easter weekend to help them package the specialty breads and get them ready for the big day. It's a win-win for everybody-- the very BEST kind of partnership!
If you own a business and would like to partner with us to make something great happen, give me a call! I'd love to talk with you!
Lonnie Viner
Executive Director
P.S. We can always use monetary donations. Please take a moment and donate today!

Pre-Order Your Honey Bunnies for Easter
Looking for a little special something for Easter?
Our good friends at the Cedar Rapids Great Harvest Bread Co. are handcrafting Honey Bunnies from their honey whole wheat bread dough! The Honey Bunnies are totally adorable and absolutely delicious! The Great Harvest Bread Co. creates the bread bunnies using five simple ingredients: freshly ground whole wheat flour, honey, yeast, water, and salt. The Honey Bunnies cost $15 each, and for each Honey Bunny purchased, the bakery will donate $2 to the animals at the Cedar Valley Humane Society. Honey Bunnies will be available Friday and Saturday before Easter, but we encourage you to pre-order by calling the bakery at (319) 826-6357. A limited number of these Honey Bunnies will be made, and the demand will be high, so please place your order right away! The Great Harvest Bread Co. is located at 5070 Lindale Dr. NE in Cedar Rapids. Hours are Monday through Friday 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Saturday from 7 a.m. and 5 p.m.; and Sunday 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The bakery will be closed Easter Sunday. Bring Out the Best in Your Dog!
Our Dog Obedience Training Classes begin at the end of April and run for seven weeks. The class will cover focus, sit, down, stay, stand, walking on a loose leash, heel, and recall. Your dog must be at least five months old with a current rabies vaccination. Cost is $90 if you pre-register. If you wait until the first day of class to register, you'll pay $10 more. The class fee includes a Martingale training collar and a graduation certificate. We highly encourage pre-registration because each session is limited to 10 participants. There are two sessions:
Please bring the following items to your first class:
- A copy of your dog's current shot records (must have an up-to-date rabies vaccination).
- Treats for your dog.
- Phone number you can be reached at in the evenings in case we need to cancel class due to bad weather.
Classes will be taught by Gary Harrington, an Animal Behavior College Certified Dog Trainer and AKC Canine Good Citizen Evaluator. Gary also is certified in Pet First Aid through the American Red Cross. This will be his ninth year teaching at the Cedar Valley Humane Society. All proceeds benefit homeless animals at the Cedar Valley Humane Society. For more information, contact Stephanie Schmitz at (319) 362-6288 or stephanie.schmitz@cvhumane.org. |
City of Shellsburg Enters into Contract
The Cedar Valley Humane Society now provides animal control services for the City of Shellsburg. The contract covers both dogs and cats. Farm animals, birds, wildlife and exotic species are excluded.
If you are a resident of the City of Shellsburg, and you have a stray in your possession, please contact us at (319) 362-6288 during regular business hours, Monday through Friday noon to 7 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday, noon to 5 p.m.
If you need assistance when we are closed, you should call the Shellsburg Police Department at (319) 436-7763.
If you live within the Shellsburg city limits and can no longer care for your pet, you may relinquish him to us for a $50 fee, which is the standard surrender fee for pet owners living within contracted areas. |
Volunteer Spotlight: Arthur Kim and Brianna Wright
Arthur Kim and Brianna Wright have been volunteers at the shelter since November. And, boy, have they been taking on a lot of extra responsibilities!
Not only do they walk dogs and socialize cats, but they helped at the Chili Supper in January. They also have recently chosen to help our staff clean cat condos and dog kennels in the mornings when needed! The work is (hardly ever!) glamorous and fun, but they always have smiles on their faces and are always willing to help.
Arthur and Brianna, we are very lucky to have volunteers like you two. We are so glad that you have chosen to volunteer with us. Thank you for all of the great work you've done! |
Happy Tail: Hermie (now Hunter) is Such a Blessing
I just wanted to take a minute to tell you how much we adore our new addition.
We adopted Hermie (renamed Hunter) on Thursday and he is such a blessing to us. He is remarkably well-mannered for such a young puppy! He gets along so well with our other two dogs, too!
My kids were at their dad's last night, so Hunter slept in my bed along with my Lab, Hawkeye, and my Pug/Bichon mix, Sophie. He slept all night long!
Anyway, I just wanted to let you know how loved he is!
Courtney J.
Remember, YOU can send us your Happy Tail, too!
