Featured Feline:
Lucille

Lucille came to us as a stray at the end of February. She is a bit of a diva and can be a little particular about who she hangs out with. She enjoys being petted, but when she's done, she expects you to know it, so learning to read her body language will be a big plus. If you're looking for a kitty you can win over, this girl is ready to give you a chance. Come on in and meet the lovely Lucille.
Compatible Canine:
Mocha

Mocha transferred into our care at the end of February. This sweet and easygoing girl will need a fenced-in backyard so she can run around. Mocha is good with children, but not so great with cats. She can be nervous and a little high-strung, so we think she would do best with a routine-oriented family to help her build her confidence. Mocha wants to get to know the people she's with, so she would probably do best in a quiet, low-key environment without a lot of people she would consider strangers stopping by. If Mocha sounds like your girl, stop in and meet her!

Spring feels like it's here... hopefully to stay!

Like us, our pets can't wait to be outside in the warmer weather. This can lead to lost pets.

Cats can slip through doorways unnoticed, or perhaps even through an open window. Dogs tend to wander further than right outside the back door to do their business, and they can escape past gates we thought were latched or go over or under a fence. We need to be extra attentive to keep our pets safe!

Right now is the perfect time to resume giving flea and tick preventative if you stopped over the winter months. It's also the time to make your pets more comfortable -- and prevent lots of furry dust bunnies! -- by brushing out their winter coats.

Cats begin to breed when the warmer weather comes, so if you know people with intact cats, please encourage them to spay and neuter their kitties to prevent unwanted litters.

Enjoy the warmer weather safely with your pets!

Voting Ends Friday!

There are only two more days to vote for us on the A-List!

We've slipped a little in the Pet Services category, so we need your vote! We want to come out on top in two categories: Best A*List logoPet Services and Best Pet Supplies!

Last year we took First Place in Best Pet Supplies and Third Place in Best Pet Services! (Yup, we had some VERY stiff competition!) But the year before that, we were FIRST Place in BOTH categories.

We want to win both categories again, and to do it, we need YOU! Please go to Hoopla/KCRG A-List and place your votes! Don't forget to vote for us in BOTH categories! Every vote counts. Voting ends March 13!

Benton County & City of Atkins Sign Contracts

The Cedar Valley Humane Society now provides animal control services for unincorporated Benton County (dogs only) and the City of Atkins (both dogs and cats).

Farm animals, birds, wildlife and exotic species are excluded from the contracts.

If you are a resident of unincorporated Benton County or the City of Atkins, and you have a stray in your possession, please contact us at (319) 362-6288 during regular business hours, Monday through Friday noon to 7 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday, noon to 5 p.m.

If you need assistance when we are closed, you should call the Benton County Sheriff's Department at (319) 472-2337.

If you live in unincorporated Benton County or within Atkins' city limits and can no longer care for your pet, you may relinquish him to us for a $50 fee, which is the standard surrender fee for pet owners living within contracted areas.

We feel fortunate that both Benton County and the City of Atkins have chosen us to provide this service, and we look forward to helping more animals in Eastern Iowa!

We Asked, You Answered!

We asked icon
Do your pets sleep with you? How's that working for you?

Jessica Mikesell: I sleep with several, but my bearded dragons are so small they only take up a pillow.

Deanna Randow Edmonds: Yep, for a while. Then, they sleep in my daughter's bed. Then, back into mine. And every now and then on the mattress that is on the floor next to my bed because I thought they would like a nice bed of their own as well!

Kameron Hiller: Yes, nothing better than cat cuddles... or them hogging the foot of the bed.

Sara Kerr Nekvinda: No. Our dogs sleep next to the bed but come for hugs and kisses before we go to sleep. I originally kept them out of the bed because of my nice linens, but it's also because I don't like the crowding, heat and bad breath. They have their own queen-size bed in the spare bedroom, so I will sometimes go in there to read and snuggle for a while.

Sherri Mack Vice: Of course... couldn't sleep without them!

Jolene Norton: My dog lays directly on my legs. Works for the most part. I just move him over if I get uncomfortable.

Paula Knowles: I have three dogs--one usually between my legs, one at my side and one at my feet. Who needs a blanket!?! They move if I move. Thank goodness there isn't another person though!

Billie Jo Udorvich-York: Yes! Two cats on the pillow above my head, and one dog lying up against me! All touching me, and I go to sleep with gentle purring in stereo!

Volunteer Spotlight: Kim and Ellie Hawkins

Kim Hawkins and her 14-year-old daughter Ellie are volunteers AND hand and pawadopters. They adopted their dog, Jace, from us. They say he is the best dog they've ever had, and they attribute it in part to the care Jace received at the Cedar Valley Humane Society.

Kim and Ellie began socializing cats in January and have continued to become more involved by walking dogs as well. So far, they have logged about 30 hours together!

Kim and Ellie, we thank you for not only adopting Jace and giving him a loving forever home, but for being such wonderful and devoted volunteers!

Happy Tail: Nora (now Daphne) Adjusts Seamlessly to Family Life

Jesse and DaphneNora (now Daphne) is adjusting to life as part of our family seamlessly. Our kitties aren't too sure about her yet, but she's loving the fenced-in yard and has made friends with the neighbor dog already! They had a lot of fun racing each other this afternoon.

Thank you all for the work that you do. We're grateful to have added a new member to our family today.

Warmest regards,

Amy and Jesse H.

Remember, YOU can
send us your Happy Tail, too!
