Tomorrow is Valentine's Day, so let's talk love.
Thirteen-year-old Jordan Sanders loves animals.
In fact, she loves them so much that, for the past five years, this amazing young lady has used her time and talents to raise money for our homeless animals.
This past holiday season, she baked and packaged more than 8,000 festive treats and sold them to friends and family and neighbors. Wow, that's a lot of cookies!
Jordan donated all the proceeds-- more than $1,900-- to help the cats and dogs at our shelter.
We are touched and honored by Jordan's extraordinary efforts. Her generosity and spirit is an inspiration to us all, reminding us that we can ALL make a difference in the life of an animal.
And we love that!
Lonnie Viner Executive Director P.S. You can make a difference in an animal's life, too! This Valentine's Day, take a moment to make a donation in honor of a beloved animal or an animal lover you know! |

New Processes for City of Urbana Residents
As of today, the Cedar Valley Humane Society will provide animal control services for the City of Urbana.
If you are a City of Urbana resident with a stray animal, please contact us at (319) 362-6288 during regular business hours, Monday through Friday noon to 7 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday, noon to 5 p.m.
If you need assistance after hours or when we are closed on the weekend, you should call the City of Urbana Police Department at (319) 443-2780. If assistance is needed on weekday mornings, please call City Hall at (319) 443-2400.
The animal control service contract covers dogs, cats, and certain other small companion animals, such as domestic rabbits, hamsters, and guinea pigs. Farm animals, birds, wildlife and exotic species are excluded.
If you live within Urbana's city limits and can no longer care for your pet, you may relinquish him to us for a $50 fee, which is the standard surrender fee for pet owners living within contracted municipalities.
We feel fortunate that the City of Urbana has chosen us to provide this service, and we look forward to helping more animals in Eastern Iowa! |

Volunteer Spotlight: Cory and Sara Flannagan
Husband and wife duo Cory and Sara Flannagan began volunteering in December and have since then become very involved in our volunteer program.
The Flannagans often come to the shelter to walk and socialize dogs in their spare time. For January's chili supper fundraiser, they made a delicious dessert. They also cleared tables and assisted guests throughout the event.
Cory and Sara, your love for animals shows in everything you do! Thank you for supporting our mission in a variety of ways. We really appreciate your dedication! |
Happy Tail: Midnight (now Anubis) Instantly Falls in Love
A week before Christmas 2013, I came in looking for a companion for my 10-month-old Maine Coon after my senior cat died. I was looking for a black cat at the time, since I've always had a fondness for them and have heard they are harder to adopt out.
A friend and I drove up to your shelter. After a few minutes, I came across a 10-month-old black cat named Midnight. The second I opened his kennel, he trotted up to me and started to climb onto my shoulders. When he plopped down on me and started purring, I knew he was coming home with me.
He has since been renamed Anubis (Nubi for short) after one of my favorite Egyptian mythology characters. Anubis is one of the most social cats I have ever owned! He instantly falls in love with anyone who comes through my apartment door! He adores attention and even, surprisingly, took an instant liking to my Maine Coon.
Anubis' favorite pastimes are playing with his toy mouse, chasing the laser pointer, and wrestling with his new brother, Cheshire Cat. He also has a fondness for chewing on things, and I've had to get him some miniature dog chew toys to satisfy that love.
Thank you for letting me adopt him! He is a happy and healthy cat!
Gabby C.
Remember, YOU can send us your Happy Tail, too!
