Featured Feline:
Zipper

Zipper is a handsome boy who likes life on his own terms. He will come to you for loving, though! He likes to be petted and would love to have a family of his very own to hang out with. (TV, anyone?) Zipper is a member of our Silver Paws Club and can be adopted for only $45. Come meet this sweetie pie today!
Compatible Canine:
Freckles

Freckles transferred into our care in early November. This sweet boy does well with other dogs. He also gets along with cats and kids of all ages. Freckles is still a young'un, so you should expect some puppy behavior, like chewing on household objects. He is also FULL of energy, so be prepared to walk him a lot and help him burn it off every day! (Tired dog = happy dog!) Freckles will need some guidance when it comes to how to be well-mannered, so we suggest positive behavior reinforcement and basic training. Come meet Freckles today!

You did it! You raised $44,077 to help the animals during September's $30K in 30 Days Challenge!

It's truly amazing what a community of generous animal lovers can accomplish! Grassroots fundraising efforts brought the total to just over $23,000, and our friends at ITC Midwest and ITC Holdings pushed us past the $30K goal.

Whether you raised $5 or $15,000, or made a donation in any amount, you were a huge part of this success!

As we enter the season of giving, we appreciate your continuing generosity.

On behalf of the animals,

Lonnie Viner

Executive Director

P.S. There are many ways to share the spirit of the season with our animals! If your workplace, neighborhood, or community group would like to put together a donation drive, here's our wish list! And, of course, monetary donations are always welcome.

ITC Contribution Powers Us Past $30K Goal

We have officially wrapped up our $30K in 30 Days Challenge!

Launched on September 1, the fundraising campaign's focus was to raise money to help take care of the animals and provide funding for necessary shelter updates and repairs.

After all the pledges were fulfilled, the total was more than $44K.

Employees of ITC Midwest played a significant role in helping to push past the $30K goal, raising nearly $7,000 for the animals at their annual golf outing in September. Matching contributions from ITC Holdings and Joseph L. Welch, chairman, president, and CEO of ITC, brought the total ITC donation to more than $20,000.

Some of the pressing shelter updates, such as the purchase and installation of new drain covers, have already been completed. Replacing kennel locks and doors and acquiring a generator are in the works.

Our hearts are truly warmed by this outpouring of generosity and compassion! We simply can't thank all of you enough!

Holiday Open House

We'll be serving up coffee, cookies, and other holiday yummies at our Holiday Open House on Sunday, December 14, from noon to 5pm.

Award-winning caricaturist Kira Layli will be creating fun and unique caricatures from 2:30 to 5pm. Bring your kiddos (the two-legged and four-legged kind) and let Kira create an awesome, personalized holiday gift for your family.

She can also draw from hard-copy photos if the kid-and-pet wrangling is too stressful. (Please no photographs on mobile devices, though! The small screens make it difficult to draw.)

A black-and-white or color caricature will set you back just $15 per face. (Two people = $30. Two pets = $30. One pet and one person = $30.) This year, there will be a limit of one drawing per sitting. If the schedule permits, we'll be happy to let you have a second sitting.

It's the feel-good event of the season...and a perfect way to pick up a one-of-a-kind gift! And if you have a little extra jingle in your pocket, you can drop some coin in our donation bank. We guarantee you our shelter sweeties are on Santa's "nice" list!

Think Local. Drink Local. Support Local.

Our friends at 7G Distributing want you to enjoy a local brew while helping the animals this month!

Through January 1, 2015, when you purchase products from Millstream Brewing Co., Great River Brewery, or Backpocket Brewing, 7G Distributing will donate a portion of the proceeds to help our shelter animals.

You can pick up a six-pack (or case!) at your local grocery store or convenience store, or stop in at a local bar or restaurant and have a cold draft!

It's an easy way for the 21-and-older crowd to support the local breweries and help support our work with homeless animals at the same time!

Chili's Donates 15% of Your Purchase

Eat at Chili's Restaurant, 1250 Collins Rd. NE, Cedar Rapids, between December 1, 2014, and February 1, 2015, and 15% of your bill will be donated to the Cedar Valley Humane Society!

Pick up a hard-copy voucher at the shelter, or just show your server the voucher on your cell phone or other mobile device.

For your convenience, the voucher is posted in several places: in this article, on www.cvhumane.org and on our Facebook page.

Feel free to share the voucher with everyone you know. The more people who use the voucher, the more money Chili's will donate to help our shelter animals!

What embarrassing things does your pet do?

Megan Sarah Dodson: My labsky rescue loves to talk to me, and whenever I am texting or on my cell phone she uses her paws to whack it out of my hand. And then she will put her paw on me and do this howl bark that is hilarious as if she is saying "pet me!" And that's not the half of it! She eats so much snow! Mouth to the ground and walks!

Dana Hardiman Cooper: My cats talk sooo much and sooo loud. When I am working from home and on conference calls, people think I have babies in my house.

Shannon Alfrey: When our Graham goes to the bathroom, it's the loudest most explosive foul burning-tire-smelling experience ever! And he always does it when I'm eating or on the phone.

Lori Vandeventer: Toss up between peeing on an innocent bystander and farting while he humps his bed.

Melanie Harrison: Humps her toy frog... and only when we have company!

Julie Fisher: I worked in a church for many years and would take my dog in with me on days I would be in the office alone... she snuck off and dropped a huge load in the sanctuary. I didn't notice... but the next day the minister did! Oops.

Volunteer Spotlight: Lynne and Gehrig Abbot

Lynne and Gehrig Abbot are a mother and son duo who have been volunteering since September. They have hand and pawtaken on a variety of tasks, such as walking dogs, socializing cats and helping with events.

Back in October, they came to the shelter extra-early to pick up supplies, baked goods and a dog to take to the Dog-O-Ween event. They had smiles on their faces when we first saw them that morning and were STILL smiling when they dropped everything off at the shelter later that day!

Lynne and Gehrig, we thank you for going out of your way to be dedicated volunteers, and for always having such a positive attitude while volunteering with us!

Happy Tail: Ridder (now Marvin) is Doing Great!

Ridder (now known as Marvin) is doing so great in our home.

He is no longer scared or hiding from everything. He loves his new brothers and sister, and he really loves his comfy bed!

We took him in for a photo shoot and wanted to share with you! Thank you for all you do for the animals! We sure love our Marv!

Laura and Tim R.

Remember, YOU can
send us your Happy Tail, too!
