Featured Feline:
Polly

Polly came into our care in early August. This lovely girl is shy but pretty easy to win over, once she gets to know you. She'll purr as soon as you pet her, and she likes to talk to let you know how she's feeling. Polly enjoys being brushed and cuddled, but she prefers not to be picked up. Polly enjoys her own space with her own bed. She would do best as the only pet in a quiet home. As a member of our Silver Paws Club, Polly can be yours for only $45. Come meet sweet Polly and fall in love!

Peanut

Add a description
Peanut came into our care in mid-September because his family was moving and couldn't take Peanut with them. This smart guy would do best in a low-key household where all the kids are at least 15 years old (if there are any). He's a very friendly, happy guy who loves to run and play. (Squeaky toys are his total fave!) Peanut has a bunch of energy to burn off, so a fenced-in yard would be great. He knows how to sit and shake, and we think he could be taught to do a whole lot more! He loves to play with dogs that are about the same size as he is, but he can be a little bossy around small dogs. Peanut can be a little nervous at first, but it doesn't take him long to open up and want to sit on your lap! (Don't tell him he's too big!) Come meet Peanut today and see if he's right for you! As a member of our Lonely Hearts Club, Peanut can be your furbaby for only $75.

This year, we have expanded Draws for Paws to make the fundraiser even more exciting and successful!

This Saturday, six eating and drinking establishments will host Draws for Paws, sponsored by Fleck Sales. Draw and bottle specials begin at 10am, one hour before the Hawkeye-Minnesota game, and you'll need to purchase a souvenir cup to take advantage of the specials. You can get yours from the shelter or any participating establishment.

We're also going to be selling raffle tickets for a Toshiba 50-inch LED TV! (Wouldn't you like to win that?) Tickets are only $5 or five for $20, and we'll draw the winning ticket the following week.

We hope that you'll bring your friends, have fun cheering on the Hawkeyes, and feel good about supporting a great cause!

See you at Draws for Paws!

Lonnie Viner

Executive Director

P.S. At the risk of sounding like a mom, be sure to drink responsibly and have a designated driver. And remember, this event is only for those 21 or over. If you would rather skip the party, you could simply make a monetary donation. Thanks for your support!

Biggest-Ever Draws for Paws This Saturday

Hey, Hawkeye fans!

Join us for the seventh annual Draws for Paws-- our BIGGEST Draws for Paws ever!-- sponsored by Fleck Sales, on Saturday, November 8!

Check out our list of participating watering holes, grab the crew and head on down! The fun begins at 10am, one hour before kickoff of the Iowa vs. Minnesota game.

Purchase your Draws for Paws souvenir cup at the shelter or at any participating business. Draws for Paws cups are available for $10 on the day of the event, and $7 prior to the day. One hundred percent of the cup proceeds directly benefits the animals at the Cedar Valley Humane Society.

During Draws for Paws, the souvenir cup will get you $2 draws and $3 bottles of Miller and Coors products, with $1 of each sale going back to the Cedar Valley Humane Society. Drink specials will begin at 10am and end one hour after the end of the game. (Souvenir cup supplies are limited, so we'll switch to wrist bands when they're gone!)

Don't forget to purchase raffle tickets for your chance to win a Toshiba 50-inch LED TV, valued at more than $600! Tickets cost only $5 each, or you can buy five tickets for $20. The more tickets you buy, the better chance you have of bringing the big screen home! The raffle will be held the following week.

KDAT will be broadcasting live from NewBo Alehouse from 10am to noon, so tune in, stop in and join the fun!

Participating businesses include:
  • Parlor City, 1125 Third Street SE, Cedar Rapids
  • NewBo Alehouse, 1201 Third Street SE, Cedar Rapids
  • Red's Public House, 112 Second Street SE, Cedar Rapids

  • Otis' Tailgators Sports Bar, 3969 Center Point Road NE, Cedar Rapids (bottle specials only)

So pick your favorite place to catch the Hawkeye game, drop some green on a Draws for Paws cup, and cheer on the home team!

New Reduced Adoption Fees for Senior Pets

We're so excited! Thanks to the sponsorship of a generous donor, our adoption fees for Silver Paws Club members have been reduced!

The Silver Paws Club is exclusively for animals seven years old and older. Due to their age, older animals are sometimes overlooked in shelters, resulting in lengthier stays.

To help counteract that tendency, our prices for older animals were already somewhat lower than our standard adoption fees. (Dogs in the Silver Paws Club were $100, and cats in the Silver Paws Club were $75.)

Beginning immediately, the new reduced fees are $75 for dogs and $45 for cats.

We are sure the lower adoption fees will be even more of an incentive for potential adopters to meet and fall in love with a senior pet!

We Asked, You Answered!

We asked icon
Do your pets look forward to weekends as much as you do? How can you tell?

Kari Zitek Ness: Yes! I swear they know when it's the weekend! If I'm not wearing scrubs and I leave, they're like WTH....

Deb Breitbach Carney: No, they still want treats at 5:30 a.m.

Kayla Carol Kensett: Yep! He enjoys sleeping on me.

Heather Rios: They have no clue.

Anna Crabb: Our schedules are so odd that the humans don't even know when the weekend is! We're just happy when the pack is all here!

Volunteer Spotlight: Lori Parks

hand and pawLori Parks has been volunteering for us since June of last year.

She has been a huge part of the success of many events, including the Great Harvest Bread Company Easter fundraiser, where she helped bag and prep specialty bread loaves. She also helped load and unload donations for both of our Stuff the Stuff Truck donation drives. In between deliveries, she even socialized dogs!

For the Hiawatha Pumpkin Festival, Lori arrived at the shelter ever-so-early to collect all the items for our booth, including a dog! She helped man the booth, and when the day was done, tore it down and brought everything back.

At the shelter, Lori always makes sure to walk the dogs that have the most energy and need it the most!

Lori, thank you so much for your dedication! You always come through for us and the animals.

Happy Tail: Trigger (now Ajax) Loves His Big Brother

Trigger, now known as Ajax, has adjusted very well. He seems to be happy and LOVES having his big brother Duke to play with! We can't thank you enough for allowing him to be part of our family!

Forever grateful!

Jessica and Tommy B.

Remember, YOU can
send us your Happy Tail, too!

I like cats a lot. I've always liked cats. They're great company. When they eat, they always leave a little bit at the bottom of the bowl. A dog will polish the bowl, but a cat always leaves a little bit. It's like an offering.
