Featured Feline: Martika
Martika came into our care in late July. She is a fun-loving gal with a sweet personality. Martika likes to dip her paws into her water and clean her face. This dainty, pretty kitty will coo and chirp to express her feelings. She's very social and would make a great family cat. Martika will tolerate being around other cats, and when it comes to the family dog, well, she'll be happy to inform him who is in charge. As a member of our Lonely Hearts Club, Martika can be adopted for only $45. If your life needs a little more Martika, come on in and meet her! |
Compatible Canine: Thor
Thor is a very happy, loving boy! He likes to explore his surroundings and smell just about everything and tell you all about it! (Hey, he is a coonhound, after all.) Thor would benefit from some basic training, just so he knows what is expected of him. He enjoys running around and playing with tennis balls. We think he would do great on an acreage where he could be outside with his people, but we're not sure how he would interact with farm animals. Thor would do best in a home where the kids are all 15 years old or older, if there are any. Come meet Thor today and see if he's right for your family! |

Kittens, kittens, and more kittens!
Just like human kids, each kitten has their own personality. Cuddly... rascally... rambunctious... curious... playful... so many different personality traits!
But all these adorable kittens are the same in one way: they deserve to be adopted by loving families.
To help the kittens find homes faster, we are running a Half-Price Half Pint kitten adoption special. If you or someone you know would like to adopt a kitten, now is a wonderful time to do so.
The kittens have it good here. Our staff and volunteers give them love and playtime, and our shelter is clean and well-maintained. But as the old saying goes, "There's no place like home."
On behalf of the kittens-
Lonnie Viner Executive Director P.S. If the time isn't right for you to adopt, please consider making a donation to support our animals. |

Are You Ready for Hallo-Weekend?
The weekend before Halloween is when the fun begins! This year, we have two opportunities for you and your pooch to make a spooky statement. On Saturday from noon to 2pm, join us at the Zoe's Deli Howl-O-Ween Costume Contest at the Nancy Doreen Huffman Dog Park in Mount Vernon. Enjoy all the fun costumes and the friendly competition. Our volunteers plan on bringing an adoptable dog or two, so you might even find a new furry family member to add to your pack! The registration fee is $5 per dog, and the event will be held rain or shine. A portion of the proceeds benefits the Nancy Doreen Huffman Dog Park. The fun continues on Sunday at Theisen's annual Dog-O-Ween! (New this year: a dog and person(s) category!) The Halloween costume contest takes place at BOTH Cedar Rapids locations: 3111 16th Ave. SW and 1800 51st St. NE, so you can go to whichever store is convenient for you! Registration begins at 11 a.m., and the contest starts at 1 p.m. (No pre-registration before Sunday is required!) Registration is $7, and all entries will receive a $7 Theisen's gift card. There are two categories of competition this year: 1) Dogs Only and 2) Dog and Person(s) Combo. The overall best in each category will win a grand prize of a $150 Theisen's gift card. First runner-up in each category will receive a $100 Theisen's gift card; second runner-up gets a $75 gift card; and third runner-up gets a $50 gift card. The $7 entry fees are donated directly to the Cedar Valley Humane Society. All dogs must be:
- leashed or contained.
- at least six months old.
- less than 200 pounds.
Stop by Theisen's (or swing by the shelter) and pick up a flyer for the full contest rules. |
We Asked, You Answered!
What's the most unusual command or cue that your pet understands?
Vanessa Proehl: "Sneeze." Sounds crazy, but you say "sneeze" to our Sheltie, and he sneezes. Hilarious to watch!
Linda Rabik: I ask my cat if he is "ready" and he gets in position to bat his ball back to me. He will do this 10 to 20 times!
Krystal McClain: "Go with Ellie." Our daughter has anxiety, and our shelter dog has learned to comfort her on command.
David Dixon: I raise my hand, palm up and move my first finger in a come hither sort of way. Well then, she is right by my side.
Toni Roquet: "Inside voice." When they're being loud inside, I'd say it and they bark really quiet.
Desiree Van Polen: My husband taught our 11-year-old dog "Password." When he wants to go out to go potty, my husband asks him, "What's the password?" and the dog will bark to get my husband to open the door.
Heather Marie Suminski McGillivray: "Scooze, please" and our dogs know to move out of the way.
Kyle Gowans: "Dance." Don't matter why you say it. If she hears it, she will spin on her hind legs and then expect a treat.
Michelle Miers McIllece: Our dog will go get his toy chicken when you tell him "Dudley, get your chicken!" No matter where it is, he always finds it right away!
Heather Conley: We had an Aussie who would run over and put her ear toward your face when we said, "Come here, I've got to tell you a secret." My current dog doesn't really have any unusual verbal commands, but as soon as I pick up plastic bags from the store, she races to the door to go for a walk.

We adopted Daisie, now known as Nala, in August 2014.
She is so happy, loving and gentle. She is very well behaved and already potty trained. Nala loves to run and play.
We love her and she is a wonderful addition to our family!
