Featured Feline: Snickers
Snickers came into our care in late May. She is kind of a shy girl, but she's still very curious of her surroundings. Snickers enjoys being held and petted and cuddled -- and she absolutely loves soft, comfy blankets! She is a calm cat with a sweet purr. When Snickers is feeling playful, she'll nibble your hair and give you nose kisses. She's OK with other cats, and we think she would be good with kids and dogs. As a member of our Lonely Hearts Club, she can be brought home for only $45. Come meet the sweet Snickers today! |
Compatible Canine: Creek
Creek came to us as a stray in mid-July. He is a very excitable, energetic boy who wiggles his whole body just for fun! He loves to play fetch, but he's not very good at bringing the toy back and letting go of it. (Hey, maybe the human will play chase!) Creek would be a big ol' lap dog if you let him. He does know sit and shake, but he also jumps a lot. Continuing his basic obedience training would be an excellent thing for this boy. Creek's fave treat is a rawhide, but we're guessing he would love 'em all! Come meet this sweetie today! Creek is a member of our Lonely Hearts Club, so he can be adopted for only $75. |

Wow! More than $20,000!
That's how much you all donated to our $30K in 30 Days Challenge this September.
I'm both gratified and humbled to see such a large number of donations pour in over the course of just one month. It's a testament to how vital our work is to the residents of eastern Iowa.
Right now we have nearly 150 companion animals in our care. Annually, we provide care and refuge to about 1,300 animals. I feel so blessed to work for an organization that gives these companion animals a second chance at life.
And, surely, with your generous, ongoing support, we will be here for many animals-- and years!-- to come.
On behalf of today's animals, and the ones we will serve in the future-
Lonnie Viner Executive Director P.S. Even though the $30K in 30 Days Challenge is over, our need for funding is ever present. Please take a moment to donate today. |

Pick a CatDuck from the Fishbowl!
We're holding a CatDuck Fishbowl cat adoption special now through Sunday, October 12! What the heck is a CatDuck? We're glad you asked! A CatDuck is a toy that is shaped like a rubber duck, but looks like a cat and duck combined! When you're ready to go home with your selected cat, our staff will give the fishbowl a good shake to mix up the CatDucks... then you close your eyes, reach your hand in, and pick a CatDuck. The price on the bottom will determine your reduced adoption fee! No adult cat's adoption fee will be more than $45. You could even get a cat ABSOLUTELY FREE! The CatDuck Fishbowl special applies only to cats who are one year old or more. We have more than 40 cats to choose from, and as they go to their new homes, we'll move more into their place. (Yep, we've got plenty of cats!) We're open from noon to 7pm on weekdays, and noon to 5pm on the weekend. All cats are spayed/neutered, vaccinated, deparasitized, and microchipped. Standard adoption processes apply.

Your Unwanted Stuff Can Help the Animals!
This Saturday is our fall Stuff the Stuff Truck donation drive! Fall and winter clothing, furniture, holiday decor, household items ( and more!) can all be brought to us on Saturday, October 11, from noon to 5pm. Our fantastic, hard-working volunteers will be here to help you unload your vehicle and place all the items directly into the Stuff Etc. truck. For this particular donation drive, we are NOT looking for supplies for the animals--we ARE looking for items we can re-sell at Stuff Etc. to raise money for medicines, vaccines, spay/neuter surgeries, and other necessities. Furniture sells REALLY well, so if you have an old-but-still-good chair or an odd end table, now is a great time to lighten your house of stuff and help animals at the same time. So... clean out your closets and cabinets! Shovel off your shelves! Rearrange your rooms! Bring us all the good stuff you don't want, and we will convert it to cash to support our mission. |
Fido Fotos is Back!
Fall is a fabulous time of the year for photos! Professional photographer Carl D. Bromberg would love to capture the personality of your adorable pup! As the owner of Visions Photography, Carl is the amazing talent behind the gorgeous photos of our adoptable animals. Visions Photography will be on hand at the shelter to take photographs from noon-5pm on Saturday, October 11, and Sunday, October 12. Sessions last approximately 20 minutes, and reservations are required. Sitting fees start at $30, and there will be options to purchase packages or photos a la carte. Visions Photography will donate 20% of the proceeds to help our shelter sweeties! Call (319) 362-6288 to make your appointment today. PLEASE NOTE: The designated photo area is outdoors, and it is not fenced in, so be sure to bring your Fido on a leash! |
Get Your Creative On!
It's October, and you know what that means! It's time to have a little fun and dress up the dog! This year, we have two opportunities for you and your pooch to make a statement. On Saturday, October 25, from noon to 2pm, join us at the Zoe's Deli Howl-O-Ween Costume Contest at the Nancy Doreen Huffman Dog Park in Mount Vernon. Enjoy all the fun costumes and the friendly competition. Our volunteers plan on bringing an adoptable dog or two, so you might even find a new furry family member to add to your pack! The registration fee is $5 per dog, and the event will be held rain or shine. A portion of the proceeds benefits the Nancy Doreen Huffman Dog Park. Then on Sunday, October 26 (the very next day!), come to Theisen's annual Dog-O-Ween! (New this year: a dog and person(s) category!) The Halloween costume contest takes place at BOTH Cedar Rapids locations: 3111 16th Ave. SW and 1800 51st St. NE, so you can go to whichever store is convenient for you! Registration begins at 11 a.m., and the contest starts at 1 p.m. (No pre-registration before October 26 is required!) Registration is $7, and all entries will receive a $7 Theisen's gift card. There are two categories of competition this year: 1) Dogs Only and 2) Dog and Person(s) Combo. The overall best in each category will win a grand prize of a $150 Theisen's gift card. First runner-up in each category will receive a $100 Theisen's gift card; second runner-up gets a $75 gift card; and third runner-up gets a $50 gift card. The $7 entry fees are donated directly to the Cedar Valley Humane Society. All dogs must be:
- leashed or contained.
- at least six months old.
- less than 200 pounds.
Stop by Theisen's (or swing by the shelter) and pick up a flyer for the full contest rules. |
We Asked, You Answered!
What does your pet do that makes you say, "He thinks he's people." (Or she....)
Alen O Rosic: They just try to be a part of a pack. If you lived with wolves (any other animal) you would try to be like them.
Jessica Wahlen: George tries to use his paws (hands) to catch his tennis ball.
Ashley Moore: Lays under the blankets with a pillow under his/her head!
Ashley Kilpatrick: My dog will sit on the couch and legitimately watch TV with me. He loves Animal Planet.

Volunteer Spotlight: Sheri and Emily Capron
Sheri Capron and her daughter Emily make volunteering part of their family time!
Their varied volunteer activities include providing daily care and kennel cleaning for both dogs and cats; walking dogs; helping with our PetSmart adoption display; participating in the Coe College parade; and fostering dogs. Their great attitude and willingness to help is appreciated by our staff and animals.
Thank you, Sheri and Emily, not only for enriching the lives of our shelter animals, but also for being flexible and handling a variety of tasks. We appreciate you! |
Happy Tail: Toto (now Mac) is Maeya's Cuddle Buddy
Toto, now known as Mac, has been perfect for my household from Day One.
As soon as I opened the kennel door, Mac came rushing out straight towards our eight-pound dog Maeya and started purring!
We never guessed introducing them would be that easy, since Maeya's hyper! But they're just cuddle buddies now and lovely playmates. Mac is amazing... we love him!
Thank you-
Carly R.
Remember, YOU can send us your Happy Tail, too!
