Featured Feline: Penny
Penny was returned to us because she wasn't getting along with the other cats in the home. Penny is a lap lover who enjoys quiet time, and she would love to be the center of your attention! She also likes to hide under blankies, get up into high places (a cat tree by the window would be purr-fect!) and chase catnip mouses... meeces... mice! (O-o-o-oh, she LOVES catnip!) This uber-kitteh gets along just fine with dogs, so if you're looking to broaden your family, Penny might be the one! |
Compatible Canine: Tara
Tara was returned to us in early September because she wasn't getting along with the other dogs in the home. This sweetie pie is a gentle and calm gal who has a lot of affection to give. Although she is considered to be a senior dog, she sure doesn't act like it. She absolutely loves to play and would talk to you all day if she had the chance! Tara would do best if she were the only dog in the home. (A privacy fence would be a bonus, too, just to prevent her from reacting to other dogs as they walk by. It's not absolutely necessary, though.) As a member of our Silver Paws Club, exclusively for animals 7+ years old, Tara can be brought home for only $100. Come meet Tara today to see if she's the right dog for your family! |

I became involved with animal welfare for the same reason we all did: to help animals.
As you might imagine, it wasn't to perform building maintenance. And that's at the heart of the issue. When it comes to focusing resources, whether we're talking about human or monetary resources, we ALWAYS choose to help the animals. After all, that IS our mission!
When we as a nonprofit organization come to that same fork in the road over and over and over again, and we make the same choice-- as we have!-- it also means we are choosing not to do some things, such as necessary repairs and upgrades.
We have launched this year's $30K in 30 Days Challenge so that we will not have to make the choice.
Our goal is to raise enough funds that we can take care of the animals AND take care of some of our sheltering facility's shortcomings: broken kennel locks and doors, deteriorating drain covers, a narrow driveway, and the lack of a generator.
If you can help us raise $30K, that money will go to food, medical needs, and other necessities for the animals. And we can choose to use our existing resources for the physical needs of the shelter.
And really, when it comes right down to it, all the facility repairs and improvements we have in mind will have a direct impact on the animals in our care... whether it's to keep the animals healthy and secure or to help make it easier for you to come visit, fall in love, and adopt a new family member.
It's truly ALL for the animals!
Lonnie Viner Executive Director P.S. Please take a moment to donate today! Your generous gift will help us meet our goal of raising $30K in 30 Days. |

The $30K in 30 Days Challenge is Underway!
During September, once again our goal is to raise $30K, which is roughly the amount it takes to provide care for all our shelter animals for 30 days. As you may know, it can cost between $200 and $300-- or even more-- to take care of an animal during its length of stay with us. That really adds up! Taking care of the animals has been-- and ALWAYS will be!-- our top priority, which means that necessary projects are often postponed, sometimes indefinitely. This year, we will incur several additional expenses. We need to:
- Install new kennel latches and locks so that we can securely house dogs in all of our kennels.
- Replace disintegrating drain covers in kennel areas so that pieces of plastic do not enter and cause damage to our newly installed septic systems.
- Widen the driveway to two lanes so two vehicles can safely pass.
- Purchase a generator so that we can maintain a healthy, safe, and comfortable environment for the animals during extended power outages.
Completing these three projects and buying a generator will take more than $30K; the total costs are closer to $60,000. Right now, we're just asking you to help raise the $30K to care for the animals. Please join the $30K in 30 Days Challenge on FirstGiving and help us by using social media to involve your friends and family in your passion for helping animals. As we always say, we can't do all we do for the animals without you! |
Facebook Feeding Frenzy Wraps Up
Dave Judd, president of Master Plumbing (right), and Tom Hall, vice-president, visited us to present a check to Executive Director Lonnie Viner. The $873 was raised during the Facebook Feeding Frenzy. For every new Like to the Master Plumbing Facebook page between July 21 and August 20, the company pledged to donate $1 worth of Hills Science Diet pet food. We were so excited to partner with such an incredible local business! Hats off to the good folks at Master Plumbing who came to us with this idea. And a HUGE thanks to everyone on Facebook who took the time to Like the Master Plumbing page and share all the posts. We're humbled to have such wonderful support! |
We Asked, You Answered!
Do your pets have to do something special to get a treat?
Kari Zitek Ness: Nope! Whatever they want, they get!
Vicki Moore: Only requirement is to sit!
Alice Linhart: Does barking incessantly count?
Mark Thomas: Nope. She just gets one whenever she likes. She comes in and looks at us with her puppy dog eyes.
Jessica AS: She's a cat... she gets treats just for being awesome.

Volunteer Spotlight: Chelsea Greener
We wish schools, colleges, and universities would allow credits in volunteering!
If that were the case, Chelsea Greener would get an A+ from us for all of the time she has donated. A longtime volunteer, Chelsea spends time with us when school is not in session. She's so dedicated to cats, our feline population would add an extra "+" for the attention they've received from her. (And we would give her yet another "+" for how she unfailingly records her hours in Volgistics.)
Chelsea, thanks so much for taking the time and making the effort to create a positive difference in the lives of our shelter cats. We wish you continued success in college! |
Happy Tail: Jingles Settles In
Jingles has quickly settled in to her new home. (Actually right away she was settled in!)
She has been a great addition to our family, and I'm very happy to have her!
Thank you for all you did for her before I adopted her!
Dick S.
Remember, YOU can send us your Happy Tail, too!
