Featured Feline:
Scout

Scout has been with us since the beginning of June. She has a very mellow and laidback personality, and she can be somewhat of a loner at times. She is a pretty little girl, just waiting to find a loving home to call her own. Scout is fearful of other cats and dogs, so she would do best as the only pet in a home. She is also not fond of vets, riding in cars, or being left alone for long periods of time. As a member of our Silver Paws Club, she can be brought home for only $75. Scout would make a great lap cat and companion, so please come meet her today!
Compatible Canine:
Jeffy

Jeffy transferred into our care towards the middle of July. Apparently, he never got the memo that he is not necessarily a small puppy anymore, because he still acts like a little kid! He has a lot of energy, and would do well in a home that lets him burn some of it off! Stop by and see Jeffy today!

Visitors to our shelter often ask: How can you work here and not take all the animals home?

Well, it's not easy!

Animals of all shapes, sizes, and personalities come to us every day. Some of them are easygoing and healthy, but others are terrified, neglected, sick, and injured.

We welcome them all. Each animal has individual needs, some more apparent than others. It is our responsibility to meet their needs and make their stay with us a positive experience.

We often bring animals that require some sort of special attention, such as a specific diet or extra human contact, into our offices. That's when it becomes difficult NOT to become attached. We become especially close to the animals, and there's no doubt each one leaves an imprint on our hearts.

At the end of the day, though, we have to remember our goal: to help the animal prepare for the transition into his or her lifelong home.

And ultimately, we know there is someone out there for every animal, someone who will love that dog or cat or rabbit or hamster. Unconditionally and forever.

Perhaps it's you!

Executive Director

We Asked, You Answered!

If your pet was a hoarder, what would we find squirreled away in his or her top-secret space?

Jacquie Johnson Montoya: Shredded paper and cardboard!

Peggy Kelley: His frog, several dusty fuzzy balls, and an old french fry.

Kelli McMurrin Franks: Mine hoards my ChapStick lol.

Jill R Cram: She is a hoarder...she stuffs all her catnip mice and fishes under the ottoman.

Andrea Rost: Fleece dog toys! My little Pomeranian has a cat hideout box, and we've found all the toys stashed in there with barely any room for her.

Deb Cook Collins: Sweet potato treats....

Lori Parks: Tennis balls and more tennis balls!

Christina Harrold: My dog is a hoarder...shoes. Usually 2-4 shoes in the crate daily!

Volunteer Spotlight: Connor Ties

Seventeen-year-old Connor Ties is a special kind of person and volunteer. He was even interviewed and featured in an article in The Gazette!

After surviving two brain tumors at the age of seven, Connor has always had an appreciation for life. Connor is a student at hand and pawXavier High School and a Boy Scout who has represented the state of Iowa at the Washington Youth Summit on the Environment. He has hopes of someday being a conservation biologist or zoologist. Perhaps when he's walking one of our dogs, the two are kindred spirits, both reveling in a second chance at life. We are honored that Connor has chosen to spend time with our shelter animals.

We thank you, Connor, for dedicating your energies to our shelter and giving our animals the attention that they deserve.

Happy Tail: Dioge (now McTavish) is a "Morning Person"

I thought I would let you know that the former Dioge has moved in and made himself at home. First and foremost, we had a chat, and I ran several names by him, and he liked McTavish. It is a proper Scottish moniker, and he will be called Mac for short. We both feel that is a HUGE improvement.

He met all of the cats but Greyson, my resident spook. That will take several days, but I think he and Missy are going to be buddies. Mac and I played ball last night, had a brief walk for personal business, and he slept in the bedroom on the floor by the bed all night.

He has not eaten his breakfast as yet, but he knows it is his and has had a taste. Beggin' strips are still the favorite snack, of course.

The only down side I have found is that he's a "morning person." Hate that. Missy is a morning person, too, so I'm hoping the two of them work that out and let me read my paper.

Thank you for your patience while we worked this out, and know that Mac has a good home and will be treated with pats and consideration by all. (Well, there may be an occasional cat whack, but....)

Ann G.

Remember, YOU can
send us your Happy Tail, too!
