Featured Feline:
Momma Cat

Momma Cat
Momma Cat was returned to us in early June because her owner could no longer care for her. This girl is the very definition of diva: sweet, sassy, and independent! Momma Cat enjoys her quiet time, but she'll let you know when she's ready for you to shower attention on her. As a member of our Silver Paws Club, exclusively for animals 7+ years old, Momma Cat can be brought home for only $75. Come on out and meet this lovely lady today!
Compatible Canine:
Reesie

Reesie
Easygoing Reesie came into our care towards the end of May. This social butterfly is great with people of all ages and loves attention. Reesie loves to play and go for walks, so being part of an active family with a big fenced-in backyard would be great for her! (She could probably stand to lose a little weight, too, so activity would be a good thing!) During her down time, this cutie loves to snuggle under the covers, so she would be an excellent cuddle buddy for long afternoon naps. Come meet Reesie today and see if she's a good fit for your family!

For his Eagle Scout Project in 2012, Drew Waters and other volunteers from Boy Scout Troop 766 extended our existing trails and created several new connecting trails behind the shelter for walking our dogs. They did such a great job that Drew was honored with the Red Cedar District Service Project of the Year award!

This year, the trails were in need of some maintenance. Due to the limbs that crossed the paths and undergrowth, it was difficult to determine where the trails began and ended.

So, when one of our young volunteers came to me this spring with an offer to restore our trails for his Eagle Scout Project, I was thrilled!

Peter Serrot of Troop 42, along with 55 fellow Boy Scouts and family members, set to work clearing brush, cutting limbs, and mulching the trails. The end result is beyond what I expected: Altogether, they put in 287 hours of strenuous work.

Now our volunteers and dogs once again have a safe and beautiful area to walk. I even find myself walking the trails and stopping along the way to sit on one of the many benches positioned along the trail.

We are so blessed to have people who generously give of themselves to lend a hand when they see we need it.

Thank you Peter and Troup 42!

Lonnie Viner

Executive Director

P.S. With the stormy weather we've been having, the trails are temporarily closed as a precaution. Please support our mission and donate today!

Buy a Paw at the Paws-A-Thon!

We know the nasty weather is creating havoc right now, and washing your car might not be the first thing on your to-do list.

For the next two weeks, though, you can take care of your car and our shelter animals at the same time. (Tempting, right?) Just bring your vehicle to the Mister HotShine Car Wash and Lube Center Paws-a-thon!

From now until July 15, purchase a paper pawprint at Mister HotShine Car Wash and Lube Center, 5055 Northland Avenue NE, Cedar Rapids, and support our efforts to save animals' lives.

Paws cost $1, $5, or $10, and you can write your name or your pet's name on them and paper the walls of the car wash.

You'll also receive an exclusive offer from Mister HotShine on your receipt. So when you're ready, stop on in and show your support!

Bring Out the Best in Your Dog!

There's still time to register, but don't delay... classes are filling up fast!

Our Dog Obedience Training Classes begin in July and run for seven weeks. The class will cover focus, sit, down, stay, Gary gives one-on-one time during classstand, walking on a loose leash, heel, and recall. Your dog must be at least five months old with a current rabies vaccination.

Cost is $90 if you pre-register. If you wait until the first day of class to register, you'll pay $10 more. The class fee includes a Martingale training collar and a graduation certificate. We highly encourage pre-registration because each session is limited to 10 participants.

There are two sessions: Please bring the following items to your first class:
  • A copy of your dog's current shot records (must have an up-to-date rabies vaccination).
  • Treats for your dog.
  • Phone number you can be reached at in the evenings in case we need to cancel class due to bad weather.
Classes will be taught by Gary Harrington, an Animal Behavior College Certified Dog Trainer and AKC Canine Good Citizen Evaluator. Gary also is certified in Pet First Aid through the American Red Cross. This will be his eighth year teaching at the Cedar Valley Humane Society.

All proceeds benefit homeless animals at the Cedar Valley Humane Society. For more information, contact Jan Clarke at (319) 362-6288 or jan.clarke@cvhumane.org.

We Asked, You Answered!

We asked icon
With the Fourth of July nearly upon us, we want to know: How do your pets react to fireworks?

Charles Dostale: Our Claire will be shaking, panting and crying. Time for the Thundershirt & calming meds.

Carl D Bromberg: Mia doesn't like em at all. Unsure about the new foster, Garth, but based on his reaction to thunder the other day, probably not well. Everyone else does OK!

Barb Trujillo: My dogs HATE them, so we send them downstairs where it's quieter and turn up the TV so it isn't as scary for them. We usually sit with them and try to comfort them as best we can. The cats - meh - they could care less.

Jess Denton-Photographer: Dave is afraid of any loud noises! This will be his first Fourth with us. I'm sure he'll be having some anxiety over the booms.

Joan Ameling Johnson: Badly. Very stressful for them. We never, ever let them outside during firework season... afraid they'd jump the fence and run off from stress.

Nicole French: My kitty cats like to watch from the windows.

Volunteer Spotlight: Charlene Baker

Charlene Baker, also known as Char, has been volunteering with us hand and pawsince 2011.

Char's willingness to be part of anything and everything helps us boost our public image, raise funds, and enrich the lives of residents in our communities. She has participated in many activities and events, including pet therapy, Tour for Life, farmers markets and the Younkers coupon book sale.

On behalf of the animals, thank you, Charlene, for all that you have done and continue to do for the Cedar Valley Humane Society!

Happy Tail: Adelle Fits Right In

I just wanted to thank you all for helping me find Adelle! She is absolutely fantastic.

It's only been a few days, and she fits right in. She spends most of her time relaxing on my lap. If I stop petting her, she nestles my cheek until I start up again. It's super cute!

Somehow I've gone from normal person to crazy cat lady overnight! Hahaha!

Thanks again for your help with finding the perfect pet. I love her so much already!

Hailey D.

Remember, YOU can
send us your Happy Tail, too!
