Featured Feline:
Tippy

Tippy came into our care at the beginning of May because his owner passed away. Due to the big changes in his life, Tippy is feeling a bit down. He enjoys being loved on and held and would certainly make a great pet for someone who wants a cuddle buddy. He also likes to climb, so a home with a cat tree would be ideal! If you would like to provide Tippy with his fur-ever retirement home and think he would be a great fit for you, come on out and meet him today! Tippy is a member of our Silver Paws Club, so he can be brought home for only $75.
Compatible Canine:
Bobby

Bobby was transferred into our care at the beginning of May. He is a sweet kiddo, but he can be quite anxious at times, such as when he is kenneled. We understand that he knows some commands, but we really think he would benefit from continued basic obedience training, because he does tend to jump. Instead of lying on a dog bed, he likes to have blankets that he can bunch up and lie against. He would probably be a good running partner, as that is his preferred activity. Consistency will be a good thing for Bobby, so if you are a family who loves routine, he might be a great fit. Bobby is loving and loyal, and a great listener to boot. As a member of the Silver Paws Club, he can be yours for only $100. Stop in and meet Bobby and see if he's right for you!

Summer has finally arrived!

For many of us, this wonderful weather means lots of fun family get-togethers and activities. (I am sure all of you who have dogs have been out on walks -- and perhaps even runs! -- with your faithful friends.)

Summertime brings back great memories of when I was a little girl. Sometimes photographs can trigger memories we thought we had forgotten. The other day I came across an old picture with our family dog. It made me smile all day!

This coming weekend, both Saturday and Sunday, Carl Bromberg of Visions Photography will be at the shelter to take pictures of your dog (or dogs), and maybe a picture or two with you as well. It's a great opportunity to focus on the spirit of summer and the personality of your beloved pup. I know I plan on reserving a spot for myself and my four-legged pals.

Carl is the man behind all the wonderful professional photographs of the adoptable animals you see on our web site. He generously volunteers several hours of time every week, and he has graciously offered to donate a portion of all Fido Fotos proceeds to help our shelter animals.

So take a little time this coming weekend, reserve your spot, and capture your memories!

Fido Fotos is this Weekend!

Have you always wanted a professional photograph that perfectly captures the personality of your adorable pup?

Add a description At Fido Fotos, you can have one taken by award-winning professional photographer, Carl D. Bromberg of Visions Photography.

Fido Fotos is this weekend, Saturday, June 21, and Sunday, June 22 from 2 to 5pm. Sessions last about 20 minutes, and reservations are required.

The event will take place on the west lawn at the Cedar Valley Humane Society. Be sure to bring whatever you need to get your dog to behave and look as adorable as possible! (Favorite treats... bandanna... cute little outfit... etc.) PLEASE NOTE: The designated "studio" area is outdoors, and it is not fenced in, so your Fido will need to be on a leash!

Packages begin at $20, and Visions Photography will donate 20% of the proceeds to help our shelter sweeties!

Call us at (319) 362-6288 to make your appointment today.

$25 Microchip Special this Sunday

Is your pet microchipped? No? Well, now's the perfect chance to get it done at a reduced price!

fingers holding microchipA microchip is about the size of a grain of rice, and it's implanted between your pet's shoulder blades. The procedure is relatively painless, similar to receiving a shot. If your pet becomes lost, the person who finds him can bring him to any vet clinic or shelter to be scanned. The unique microchip number will be traced back to you, increasing the chances that you and your pet will be happily reunited.

We're holding a microchip special on Sunday, June 22, from 2 to 5pm, to coincide with the second day of Fido Fotos. Our regular cost is $35, but for one day only, we'll microchip your pet for $25. (The peace of mind you get is priceless!)

Even though Fido Fotos is for dogs only, we welcome both dogs and cats for microchipping. No appointment necessary! Just come on into the building and we'll get you taken care of.

For more information, call (319) 362-6288.

Bring Out the Best in Your Dog!

Our Dog Obedience Training Classes begin in July and run for seven weeks. The class will cover focus, sit, down, stay, Gary gives one-on-one time during classstand, walking on a loose leash, heel, and recall. Your dog must be at least five months old with a current rabies vaccination.

Cost is $90 if you pre-register. If you wait until the first day of class to register, you'll pay $10 more. The class fee includes a Martingale training collar and a graduation certificate. We highly encourage pre-registration because each session is limited to 10 participants.

There are two sessions: Please bring the following items to your first class:
  • A copy of your dog's current shot records (must have an up-to-date rabies vaccination).
  • Treats for your dog.
  • Phone number you can be reached at in the evenings in case we need to cancel class due to bad weather.
Classes will be taught by Gary Harrington, an Animal Behavior College Certified Dog Trainer and AKC Canine Good Citizen Evaluator. Gary also is certified in Pet First Aid through the American Red Cross. This will be his eighth year teaching at the Cedar Valley Humane Society.

All proceeds benefit homeless animals at the Cedar Valley Humane Society. For more information, contact Jan Clarke at (319) 362-6288 or jan.clarke@cvhumane.org.

Happy Tail: Fern "Writes" to Say She's Nervous, Excited, Adjusting

Hi, everyone!

Yesterday was an exciting day for me. I went with Mom and Dad to Menards to buy a kennel. I was so nervous and excited I had diarrhea in the car! (Even though I had JUST had a potty break!)

I had a nice evening with my new kitten. She was not scared of me at ALL!

This morning was a relief because Mom was scared I'd be sick in the kennel, but everything is fine! Just needed a little adjustment, but it's looking good!

Tell everyone I miss them all!

Love,

Fern

Remember, YOU can
send us your Happy Tail, too!
