Featured Feline: Jewel
Jewel was brought to us by her owner in the middle of January. This sweetheart is extremely loving and affectionate! Jewel loves to talk and tell you what she is thinking. Jewel prefers to be the center of your attention, so it would be best if she were the only pet in the home. She loves people, though, especially those who give her lovin'. Jewel is a member of our Lonely Hearts Club, so she can be adopted for only $45. She might make a great addition to your family, so come in and meet this cutie pie! |
Compatible Canine: Babs
Babs was brought to us by her owner because he had too many animals. This pretty girl enjoys getting attention and is very outgoing. She seems to know "sit" but would benefit from some basic training. Babs is very active and would love to have a fenced-in yard to run around and play in. She is also curious of her surroundings. Come meet Babs today and see if you can keep up with her! |

Do you talk to your pets? Of course you do!
All of us who belong to pets engage in conversation with them. We greet our animals when we arrive home and say goodbye when we leave. We ask them questions: Are you hungry? Do you want to go for a walk? We even ask questions they could not possibly know the answers to.
Every day, I find myself having one-sided conversations with our shelter animals. They are great listeners!
To quote one of my favorite authors, George Eliot: Animals are such agreeable friends; they ask no questions, pass no criticisms.
As I look around the shelter, I often wonder: Who needs one of these agreeable friends in their life?
If you don't have a furry friend to talk to, come out to the shelter and talk to our animals... maybe you, too, will find what's been missing in your life!
Animals make a world of difference!

Make an Appointment for Fido Fotos!
Have you always wanted a professional photograph that perfectly captures the personality of your adorable pup? At Fido Fotos, you can have one taken by professional photographer, Carl D. Bromberg! As the owner of Visions Photography, Carl is the amazing talent behind the gorgeous photos of our adoptable animals. Fido Fotos, featuring Visions Photography, will be Saturday, June 21, and Sunday, June 22 from 2 to 5pm. Sessions last approximately 20 minutes, and reservations are required. The event will take place on the west lawn at the Cedar Valley Humane Society. Be sure to bring whatever you need to get your dog to behave and look as adorable as possible! (Favorite treats... bandanna... cute little outfit... etc.) PLEASE NOTE: The designated "studio" area is outdoors, and it is not fenced in, so your Fido will need to be on a leash! Package prices will be available soon, but here's what we can tell you for now: Visions Photography will donate 20% of the proceeds to help our shelter sweeties! Call us at (319) 362-6288 to make your appointment today. |
$25 Microchip Special
Is your pet microchipped? No? Well, now's the perfect chance to get it done at a reduced price! A microchip is about the size of a grain of rice, and it's implanted between your pet's shoulder blades. The procedure is relatively painless, similar to receiving a shot. If your pet becomes lost, the person who finds him can bring him to any vet clinic or shelter to be scanned. The unique microchip number will be traced back to you, increasing the chances that you and your pet will be happily reunited. We're holding a microchip special on Sunday, June 22, from 2 to 5pm, to coincide with the second day of Fido Fotos. Our regular cost is $35, but for one day only, we'll microchip your pet for $25. (The peace of mind you get is priceless!) Even though Fido Fotos is for dogs only, we welcome both dogs and cats for microchipping. No appointment necessary! Just come on into the building and we'll get you taken care of. For more information, call (319) 362-6288. |
We Asked, You Answered!
What goofy thing does your pet do with water?
Amanda Weiland Allard: My cat can't wait for us to get out of the shower so he can jump in and start licking the tub dry. That, and he dips his paw in the water bowl and licks the water from his paw.
Nicki Coleman Finger: My cat loves to flush the toilet and watch the water swirl around. Even if the lid is closed, he loves to flush the toilet. He just sits there and waits for it to fill up again, and flushes again. My poor water bill!
Darcy Dugan: Our kitty Billy loves to drink cold water from the bathroom faucet. He's also a socialite, so he'll join any one of our friends in the bathroom if he's thirsty.
Megan 'Sullivan' Weidman: Our cat Dexter has to splash the water with his paw every time before he will take a drink--even if he only paused for a second or two between drinks.
Lindsey Cook: My cat drinks water out of the bathroom faucet only. And sits in the bathtub for strange reasons. She also tries to drink out of the bathtub faucet. Otherwise, water can not touch her delicate princess paws.
Sherree Stickley: Our Hank absolutely loves water! He will push his favorite toy underwater on purpose just to bob for it. Silly boy! He also tries to dig in water!

Volunteer Spotlight: Terri Overman
Terri Overman's volunteering can be summed up in three words: dedication, consistency, and... a love of cats. (OK, that's more than three.)
Terri's feline friends at the shelter may not smile outwardly like dogs seem to, but if they could, they would all be wearing a Cheshire cat grin when Terri is around.
Terri's volunteer efforts over the last two years really add up, and her ability to bounce back is phenomenal. We can't thank her enough for returning to her volunteer duties after her injury.
Terri, you are the very definition of "dedicated volunteer." We appreciate your energy and enthusiasm, as well as the affection you show our homeless kitties. Thanks for being such a solid volunteer! |
Happy Tail: October is Everything Family Hopes For!
I just wanted to send you a picture of October and his best buddy, Felix, who we also adopted at your shelter! October is just all we could have hoped for! He is such a sweet and playful guy!
He likes to cuddle and loves his treats! He has figured out where I keep the cat treats and now will walk over to my night stand and meow at me! He also likes to meow to be picked up! (I have never had a cat do that before!)
He is just loved like crazy and is a wonderful addition to our family! Thanks, Jill and Jeff B. Remember, YOU can send us your Happy Tail, too!
