Featured Feline: Ryder
Ryder came to us towards the middle of April. He is very talkative and social... he just can't get enough attention! Ryder loves to lick your hands when you pet him. He can be a little shy at first, but he warms up fast and is very loving once he has sniffed you all about. Even though Ryder prefers not to be held, he is definitely a snuggle bug! He loves to get cozy and curl up with you! His sweet personality will steal your heart the moment you meet him! Come on in and check Ryder out! |
Compatible Canine: Max
Max was returned to us in mid-May because he was too rambunctious for the family. This sweet boy has a very fun and playful personality! (Think puppy stuck in a big dog's body!) Max would most definitely benefit from some obedience training so he can learn how to be polite. (Just like any dog, the more he knows about what is expected of him, the more well-behaved he will be!) Because Max is so rambunctious, we require that any children in the home be at least 15 years old. Max does not get along with other dogs, and cats are also a no-no. He is very vocal when he is in his kennel, but that's just because he loves attention... and lots of it! This adorable guy just can't wait to find the right home! And as a member of our Lonely Hearts Club, he can be adopted for only $75. Come meet Max today! |

My husband Dale and I have partnered with a boxer rescue group for more than 20 years. Our small acreage has been home to many dogs, some ours and some foster (and some who turned out to be both!)
I have a great love and respect for all animals, and I understand what it means to make a difference in the life of an animal.
In my life and in my career, I have always chosen to do what I believe in. Working for the Cedar Valley Humane Society has been an incredibly rewarding experience, and I've never questioned my choice of moving into the nonprofit world. I love my work and am inspired by all the people I work with.
For me, it's exciting to be able to use my expertise to strengthen our existing partnerships and nurture new relationships with individuals, businesses, and corporate citizens in our communities.
To that end, my door is always open. Please feel free to stop in and introduce yourself.
Let's make a difference together!

Takin' It On the Road
We have a couple of off-site adoption events coming up! This Saturday, plan to stop by PetSmart, 4810 First Ave NE in Cedar Rapids, from 11am to 2pm to meet adoptable animals! The adoption event will feature the cats we have on-hand, as well as a few ready-Freddy dogs that our volunteers will bring. If you fall in love, you can fill out an adoption application on the spot! We'll also be accepting donations, so bring a few dollars for the jar. Or do some shopping and pick out a few treats and toys for the animals back at the shelter. If you live on the southwest side, we'll be heading your direction the following Saturday! On Saturday, May 31, we'll have adoptable dogs at Tractor Supply, 6622 6th St. SW in Cedar Rapids, from 11am to 2pm. (It will only be dogs at this event, but one of them could be the one you've been waiting for!) You'll be able to fill out an adoption application right at the store, but we won't be able to review the application until we get back to the shelter. We'll be accepting donations at this event, too, so bring some jingle to help out the animals. |
We Asked, You Answered!
When you look into your pets' eyes, what do they seem to be saying?
Patty A Handler: My female cat Shahna says, "Mommy, why do you allow this "monster" in MY house?" (She is talking about her "sister" -- our dog, Kylie!) Kylie says, "Mommy, thank you for giving me little furry playmates! (Her "brother" and "sister" -- our sibling cats, Shahna and Moe!) All three of our "babies" say, "Thanks, Mommy and Daddy, for bringing us home from the CVHS! We love you!"
Jessica Wahlen: Tell me I'm a cute boy!
Emily Blake: Can we please go for a walk now!?
Deb Breitbach Carney: Why on earth do you allow those horrible creatures (grandchildren) into our house?
Nicole Niemeier Tjelmeland: If I look pathetic enough I know you'll give me whatever I want....
Mija Elena Bean: Gimme that Cheeto!

Volunteer Spotlight: Jennifer Peden
Jennifer Peden has been volunteering for us since February, and we are extremely thankful for all that she does for the shelter and our animals!
Jennifer has spent several weekends helping the animal care staff clean kennels and care for the dogs. She goes above and beyond... and has been known to deep clean a cage or two without being asked! In addition, she has donated plenty of supplies to the shelter. (She also brings in delicious snacks for the staff to enjoy!)
Jennifer, thank you for your generosity and hard work, for having a willingness to help where needed, and for having such a friendly attitude! You make a huge difference in the lives of our shelter dogs! |
Happy Tail: Hunter Steals Spot in Bed
Because you all seemed to genuinely care about Hunter, I just wanted to let you all know that he did great last night.
He was very interested in checking everything out, but he settled down as soon as we did and was perfect. It's obvious that he was used to sleeping in a bed because when we went to bed, he didn't hesitate to climb right up. He got up once in the middle of the night, but he went outside and did his business then came right back in and went back to bed. (This time I made sure to get in first to get my spot before he took it!)
We're taking turns going home today to let him out every couple of hours but so far he seems to be just fine in the kennel. We are looking forward to having the weekend to hang out at home to get to know each other better.
Thanks for taking such good care of him! Marsha S. Remember, YOU can send us your Happy Tail, too!
