Featured Feline:
D-Lylah

D-Lylah came to us as a transfer from another shelter in mid-March. She loves affection but enjoys her independence as well. She's not too crazy about being held and likes to do her own thing. If you're looking for a kitty that enjoys being pet and loved on from time to time but also enjoys her independence, D-Lylah is the one for you! Come on out and meet this fabulous gal today!
Compatible Canine:
Penelope

Penelope came to us as a stray at the beginning of March. She is a very social girl who knows how to sit and shake! She is very energetic but settles down once she's gotten some exercise. She is not very polite with cats, so she would need to go to a home without them. We think she would do great in a family setting and would benefit from some positive reinforcement. Penelope is a member of our Lonely Hearts Club and can be brought home for only $75. Come on out to meet this sweet and friendly dog today!

I'm pleased to announce that Lonnie Viner has been promoted from Community Programs Manager to Executive Director.

We interviewed several qualified candidates, but Lonnie was a stand-out. Not only is she thoroughly knowledgeable about the needs of our organization, she brings to the table more than 25 years of corporate management experience at the executive level.

In addition to her extensive qualifications, she has a deep passion for our mission. As a lifelong resident of the Cedar Rapids area, Lonnie has seen firsthand the Cedar Valley Humane Society's positive impact in the communities we serve.

We are very excited to gain an Executive Director with such deep roots in our community, one who is committed to steering our organization through growth and change for many years to come.

Please join me in welcoming Lonnie to her new role!

Assistance and Supplies Needed for Kitten Season

Spring is upon us, and this time of year always brings its own challenges.

Cats can have up to three litters a year, beginning as soon as the weather starts to warm. In animal welfare, this time of year is often referred to as kitten season, because shelters begin to see a large influx of kittens, often without their mommas.

These kittens commonly have special needs, depending on their age. Sometimes they are only a few days old and need to be isolated from the other animals we care for. They also require round-the-clock bottle feedings and a lot of other hands-on care.

How can I help? We're glad you asked!

We are looking for foster care providers who want to learn how to take care of and socialize extremely young kittens. This is very difficult to do in a shelter environment, so we will set you up with everything you need to succeed at home.

Exhausting? Yes. Rewarding? Absolutely!

If learning these skills and caring for baby kitties during the most critical time of their lives sounds like something you would like to do, please email our shelter manager, Lyndee Fuessley.

We also go through certain supplies at a much faster rate during kitten season. It would be greatly appreciated if you could donate any of the following necessities:
  • KMR (kitten milk replacer)
  • Kitten bottles and accessories
  • Unscented bleach
  • Liquid laundry detergent (both HE and regular)
  • Paper towels
  • Warming discs
  • Infant and children's Little Noses decongestant drops
  • Diaper rash cream
  • Baby wipes
  • Triple antibiotic ointment
You may drop off your donations Monday through Friday from noon to 7pm, or weekends from noon to 5pm. All donations are tax deductible. THANK YOU so much for your support!

We Asked, You Answered!

We asked icon
How do your pets respond to violent weather?

Jessica Wahlen: My dog barks at the thunder.

Jackie Adrian: My Brittany lifts his head, looks around-- then at me-- and yawns then lays back down.

Diane Yeager: Mostly they ignore it. I have one dog (out of four) that gets a little anxious. Melatonin helps with that. The cats don't react unless there is a HUGE clap of thunder. When that happens we ALL jump about eight feet in the air!

Annette Hoefer: Rascal wears a Thundershirt and I have to make a pillow fort around and over him.

Jess A Saurus: Our Bella, who we found during a storm, has to be under a bed or couch or under a blanket next to me. This includes loud bass or storms that she hears on our surround sound!

Charles Dostale: Claire is so scared. Not just weather-- anything loud. It's so sad!

Volunteer Spotlight: Dave Cork

For several years, Dave has been bringing an adoptable pet to Willow Gardens so the residents can enjoy the company of a companion animal.
hand and paw
Once a month, he comes to the shelter, selects a pre-approved animal, loads the furry friend into his vehicle... and away they go to bring sunshine into the day of the residents!

During Dave's visits, a dog's soft eyes or a cat's purr can trigger fond memories of a pet the resident used to have. It's common to see tears of joy shining in the eyes of everyone involved.

Dave, thank you for being so kindhearted and dependable... and for enjoying the pet therapy sessions as much as the residents do! We're glad that you find the visits so rewarding, and we feel incredibly fortunate to have you as one of our volunteers.

Happy Tail: Perfect Pebbles Loves Learning New Tricks

My family adopted Pebbles the day after Thanksgiving, and I just want to thank you so much.

She is so perfect for my family. Every single day my dad, mom, and I look at each other and ask how we got so lucky. She is so well behaved and is a lot of fun. I have been teaching her new tricks. She loves to play catch and sit pretty for treats!

Pebbles means so much to all of us. We couldn't have dreamed of a better dog to join our family. She is the most amazing dog I have ever met.

Thank you again!

Heather S.

Remember, YOU can
