Featured Feline:
Anastasia

Anastasia came to us as a stray at the beginning of April. This gorgeous girl is blind, so she will need a family who will understand her special needs. (We can help you with that!) Even though Anastasia can't see, her other senses are very strong... and she is a very smart girl! It won't take her long to learn to recognize your voice. When she senses you're close, she will stretch her head out to you so she can be petted. Anastasia will let you pick up and hold her when she becomes comfortable around you. She loves to talk and tell you what she is thinking. Come meet Anastasia and see if she's right for your family.
Compatible Canine:
Sophie

Sophie came to us in the middle of April. This active girl needs a home with a fenced-in yard, so she can safely run and play outside. Sophie already responds to sit, lie down, and shake! She enjoys her quiet time, running outside, going on walks, and playing with kids. Sophie is scared of loud noises (especially storms), riding in cars, and being left alone. She prefers not to be kenneled when she is home alone, so she might do best in a home where someone is home more often than not.

Strengthening the bond between people and animals is built right in to our mission. It's part of what we do every day!

One excellent way to nurture and deepen the bond between you and your dog is to participate in dog obedience classes. We're pleased to be able to offer these basic classes, taught by volunteer certified trainer Gary Harrington, for the eighth year in a row.

Gary is one of those special people who seem to be able to communicate with animals with no effort whatsoever. For the rest of us, it helps to have someone like Gary show us the way.

I encourage you to register for a session and see how training and interacting with your dog can be a fun, positive experience--and how rewarding having a well-trained dog can be!

On behalf of the animals-

Kirsten Eddins

President

Board of Directors

P.S. Gary generously donates the class fees to us so we can help more dogs and cats find their lifelong homes. Let's have a little fun and thank Gary by donating "In honor of Gary Harrington" today!

Classes Start Next Week, So Register Today!

Bring out the best in your dog!

Our Dog Obedience Training Classes begin at the end of April and run for seven weeks. The class will cover focus, sit, down, stay, Gary gives one-on-one time during classstand, walking on a loose leash, heel, and recall. Your dog must be at least five months old with a current rabies vaccination.

Cost is $90 if you pre-register. If you wait until the first day of class to register, you'll pay $10 more. The class fee includes a Martingale training collar and a graduation certificate. We highly encourage pre-registration because each session is limited to 10 participants.

There are two sessions: Please bring the following items to your first class:
  • A copy of your dog's current shot records (must have an up-to-date rabies vaccination).
  • Treats for your dog.
  • Phone number you can be reached at in the evenings in case we need to cancel class due to bad weather.
Classes will be taught by Gary Harrington, an Animal Behavior College Certified Dog Trainer and AKC Canine Good Citizen Evaluator. Gary also is certified in Pet First Aid through the American Red Cross. This will be his eighth year teaching at the Cedar Valley Humane Society.

All proceeds benefit homeless animals at the Cedar Valley Humane Society. For more information, contact Jan Clarke at (319) 362-6288 or jan.clarke@cvhumane.org.

Vote Now, Because It All Ends Friday!

A*List logoIt's been an uphill battle to defend our "crown," and we need your vote!

We are in a heated competition for first place in two categories: Best Pet Services and Best Pet Supplies. Last year we finished FIRST in both categories, and that's where we wanna finish again!

Voting in the KCRG A-List contest is easy, so take a moment and place your votes! Don't forget to vote for us in BOTH categories! (The categories are under the Shopping/Retail subheading.) Every vote counts! Voting ends this Friday at 5pm.

We Asked, You Answered!

We asked icon
If your pet suddenly sprouted opposable thumbs, what is the first thing he or she would do?

Nicole French: First: open his food container. Second: open the window.

Mik Beauxgard: Open the fridge.

Lindsey Cook: Open the door to go outside and chase the birds that are taunting her.

Vicki Boardrow Kiene: Feed himself.... Right now!

Amber Cornwell: It would be a toss-up between opening up the door to go outside and digging into the treat box.

Nicole Niemeier Tjelmeland: Raid the fridge!

Volunteer Spotlight: Kathryn and Andrew Shea

Last weekend, Kathryn Shea and her son, Andrew, volunteered at Tour for Life, a large, multi-organization adoption event held at the New Bo City Market. (Kathryn emailed us a month hand and pawbefore the event to make sure we would save a volunteer shift for them!)

Andrew, along with Kathryn, interacted with the public like a pro! Always willing to go the extra mile, Andrew distributed literature about our upcoming dog obedience classes and talked very knowledgeably about the shelter with the public. Both Kathryn and Andrew enjoyed dancing to the live music while helping out at our booth.

Kathryn and Andrew have assisted with many of our special events, and we very much appreciate the enthusiasm they bring to their volunteerism! Thank you both!

Happy Tail: Family Hits the Jackpot with Angel

We brought Angel home with us last week and have been thrilled ever since. What a fantastic dog!

Angel nappingShe's a big cuddle-bug and spends most evenings on the sofa, preferably with a human to pet her and give belly rubs. If we stop, she flops her head up on the person's chest and looks at them as if to say, "um, I think you need to keep going." She's very sweet and is so well behaved. We hit the jackpot!

She had her first vet appointment last Monday. The doctor thought her ears were clearing up OK, but her tail was a bit "gooey," so she didn't take out the sutures yet. We went back to the vet on Friday, and her tail looked good enough then to have the sutures taken out. We're keeping an eye on that "happy tail," but it seems to be healing nicely, no bandage. She's also gaining weight steadily, so her ribs aren't sticking out quite so much.

We got her a tag for the dog parks in Iowa City. She's been to the park three times so far and loves to play fetch. We haven't taken her into the main section of the park yet (with all the other dogs) because of her tail, but we'll probably try that soon. She's met a couple of dogs in the neighborhood, plus several people, and she's charmed them all. We also have been walking with her in the mornings and evenings to get some exercise. She walks really well on leash.

She has two beds, one upstairs and one downstairs, but usually she uses the sofa when she's downstairs. She sleeps in our room all night without any fuss (she doesn't care much for crating). We've even tried leaving her out while we run errands for a while and come home to find her lying on her bed looking very calm, no barking, nothing chewed up. We just can't believe how lucky we are to have her.

Thank you all for the wonderful work you do and for letting us give Angel a new home. We're going to keep doing whatever we can to give her the fun, loving life she deserves.

Take care-

Wendy F.

Remember, YOU can
send us your Happy Tail, too!

My cat brought me a toy. I thanked her and threw it. She sat there gave me a look that made me realize people and dogs are the crazy ones.
