Featured Feline:
Loki

Loki came into our care as a transfer from another shelter in mid-February. This sweet guy is quite a silly kiddo and loves affection! He's a big talker and will tell you all about his oh-so-stressful day when you get home from work. Loki is a member of our Silver Paws Club, exclusively for animals 7+ years old, so he can be adopted for only $75. Come on out and meet this great cat today!

Compatible Canine:
Jed

Jed transferred into our care towards the end of January. He is one big boy, with a heart and personality to match! He loves to be active and act like a goofball. Because he is a bigger dog, he would do best in a home with a lot of room for him to run and play, including a fenced-in yard. Jed is also very vocal... he sounds just like a coonhound should! (So if you live in an apartment, you'll have to pass on this one!) Happy-go-lucky Jed is a member of our Lonely Hearts Club, so he can be brought home for only $75. Come meet this fun-lovin' guy today!

We're always excited when owners and managers of local businesses come to us asking to become involved. And we love it when they have an idea that fits in with our mission!

So when the Great Harvest Bread Co. in Cedar Rapids approached us with the notion of Honey Bunnies, we were thrilled!

These little cuties are perfect for Easter, whether you nestle them into a basket, bring them to a family gathering, or just treat yourself. Made of honey whole wheat bread dough, Honey Bunnies are wholesome, delicious... and adorable!

As if that's not enough: For every Honey Bunny purchased, the bakery will donate $2 to the Cedar Valley Humane Society.

If you would like a Honey Bunny (or two or three!) for Easter, we encourage you to pre-order by calling the Great Harvest Bread Co. at (319) 826-6357. Supplies are limited, and we expect the Honey Bunnies will go fast!

On behalf of the animals-

P.S. We're so blessed to have wonderful supporters like you. Please take a moment and donate today!

Pre-Order Your Honey Bunnies Today!

Looking for a little special something for Easter?

Our good friends at the Cedar Rapids Great Harvest Bread Co. are handcrafting Honey Bunnies from their honey whole wheat bread dough! The Honey Bunnies are totally adorable and absolutely delicious!

Add a descriptionThe Great Harvest Bread Co. creates the bread bunnies using five simple ingredients: freshly ground whole wheat flour, honey, yeast, water, and salt. Like all Great Harvest products, these bunnies are so fresh there's no need for additives, preservatives or dough conditioners.

The Honey Bunnies cost $15 each, and for each Honey Bunny purchased, the bakery will donate $2 to the animals at the Cedar Valley Humane Society.

Honey Bunnies will be available Friday and Saturday before Easter, but we encourage you to pre-order by calling the bakery at (319) 826-6357. A limited number of these Honey Bunnies will be made, and the demand will be high, so please place your order right away!

The Great Harvest Bread Co. is located at 5070 Lindale Dr. NE in Cedar Rapids. (They share a building with Happy Joe's across Collins Road from Lindale Mall.) Hours are Monday through Friday 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Saturday from 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. For more information, visit www.GreatHarvestCedarRapids.com.

Fun for All, and All for Fun... and the Animals!

Bring Out the Best in Your Dog!

Our Dog Obedience Training Classes begin at the end of April and run for seven weeks. The class will cover focus, sit, down, stay, Gary gives one-on-one time during classstand, walking on a loose leash, heel, and recall. Your dog must be at least five months old with a current rabies vaccination.

Cost is $90 if you pre-register. If you wait until the first day of class to register, you'll pay $10 more. The class fee includes a Martingale training collar and a graduation certificate. We highly encourage pre-registration because each session is limited to 10 participants.

There are two sessions: Please bring the following items to your first class:
  • A copy of your dog's current shot records (must have an up-to-date rabies vaccination).
  • Treats for your dog.
  • Phone number you can be reached at in the evenings in case we need to cancel class due to bad weather.
Classes will be taught by Gary Harrington, an Animal Behavior College Certified Dog Trainer and AKC Canine Good Citizen Evaluator. Gary also is certified in Pet First Aid through the American Red Cross. This will be his eighth year teaching at the Cedar Valley Humane Society.

All proceeds benefit homeless animals at the Cedar Valley Humane Society. For more information, contact Jan Clarke at (319) 362-6288 or jan.clarke@cvhumane.org.

Volunteer Spotlight: Megan Smith and Melanie Northland

We are so fortunate to have Megan Smith and Melanie Northland volunteering with us!

Since December, Megan and Melanie have faithfully served as our ambassadors in the community, representing the Cedar Valley Humane Society at the monthly PetSmart adoption events. They take hand and pawa dog or two to PetSmart and stay several hours, interacting with PetSmart customers and answering questions about the adoptable dogs.

Last weekend, Melanie and Megan volunteered at the "Follow the Bunny Trail" event at Peck's Flower and Garden Center. In spite of having prepared hundreds of plastic eggs full of treats and toys for all the kids, we ran out! Megan and Melanie sprang into action, dashing to the store and returning with more goodies to save the day!

Melanie and Megan come to the shelter and walk dogs whenever their schedules permit. We love seeing their bright cheerful faces. They sure do seem to be having a lot of fun! Thank you, Megan and Melanie, from the staff... and all the lucky dogs who get to spend time with you!

Happy Tail: Nala: Adorable, Beautiful, and Awesome

We absolutely love Nala!

She's already well trained, and so loveable, and she has not shown any bad habits! She sits and stays, and she's very quiet. (She only barked when the neighbor from a few houses down was walking two of his dogs across the street while Nala was out, and it was because they barked at her first!) She wore herself (and us!) out the day we got her, as we had to take her out to walk, play, and check out the yard every half hour!

She tells us when she needs to go out, and she loves playing in the snow. She went crazy running all over in Curt's parents' backyard, which is the size of a football field! She wore herself out over there yesterday, and Curt's mom thinks she's a great dog! (His dad hasn't seen her yet.)

My youngest daughter thinks Nala is "adorable, beautiful, and awesome." She also finds it hilarious that one of her friends has a betta fish named Nala!

Let everyone know we loved her from the moment we saw her, and she's very happy here! She picked her own spot to lie down on the floor the first night, and that's where she sleeps. She was apparently trained not to sleep on the bed, so she won't do that, even though we would allow it.

When I came into the room I use as an office to send you this, it was the first time I had been in here since we got her. We had blocked access to the room. She wasn't happy when I blocked her, so I let her in. I guess I'll have to let her in when I'm working to keep her from whining! She lies on the floor under my chair and sleeps while I'm in here. I guess she's going to be my protector!

Thanks to everyone for the care they gave Nala while she was at the Cedar Valley Humane Society! We'll have to bring her out to see everyone sometime.

Barb W.

Remember, YOU can
send us your Happy Tail, too!
