Featured Feline: Batista
Batista came into our care as a stray in mid-December. This spirited guy has a zippy personality... his silly antics will keep you in stitches! He would adjust easily to any kind of environment (active, loud, quiet... you name it!) Batista is super sweet and affectionate, and he gets along great with other cats. Come on out and meet this fun little gentleman today! |
Compatible Canine: Aster
Aster came into our care as a stray on Christmas Day. This friendly girl will let you give her loving all day long! She is very gentle, so we think she would make a fabulous family dog. Aster can be quite curious of her surroundings. She is very smart, and it's crazy how many commands she understands! She knows how to sit, shake, lie down, roll over, wait/stay, spin around, and give high fives. As a member of our Silver Paws Club, Aster can be adopted for only $100. If you're looking for a ready-to-go girl, Aster might be the one! |

The Cedar Valley Humane Society received a wonderful and inspiring donation to help get 2014 off to a great start!
Twelve-year-old Jordan Sanders presented us a check for $1,351-- funds she raised specifically for the Cedar Valley Humane Society by baking and selling holiday treats. This is the fourth year that Miss Sanders has demonstrated her love of animals and her support for our mission by giving her time and talent to raise funds for our shelter animals.
Jordan is but one example of how young people in our community have been getting involved with the Cedar Valley Humane Society. Many have requested donations for the animals in lieu of birthday presents. Some have donated proceeds from lemonade stands, and still others have baked and sold pet treats.
These young philanthropists offer hope for the future, and we commend them all for their initiative and compassion.
On behalf of the animals-
Chuck Tourtillott Executive Director P.S. Your generous contribution makes a positive difference in the lives of homeless animals! Please take a moment to donate now! |

The game starts at 7pm, and there are all kinds of ways you can support our shelter animals! Buy tickets and pack The Stable! With the purchase of a ticket in the blue or gray zone, the RoughRiders will donate up to $6 to help our animals. You must purchase the tickets online-- they will not donate any portion of the proceeds if you purchase your tickets at the box office. Our Fundraiser ID is cvhs (all lower case, no punctuation). You will receive a confirmation email, and you can pick up your tickets at the RoughRiders box office. Be sure to say hello to our awesome volunteers who will be running an information booth in the main lobby from 5 to 7pm. Also in the main lobby, we will be accepting donations of dog and cat food. We'll have hockey-themed jewelry, sports memorabilia, and more! It's sure to be a great night at The Stable! So bring the kids or the cronies and get ready for some action on the ice with the Cedar Rapids Ruff!Riders! |
We Asked, You Answered!
What naughty thing has your pet done most recently?
Nathan Tjelmeland: My Basset Hound decided to eat a chunk of carpet from a stair step on Christmas Day.
Michelle Oldenburger: Stood up to the counter to grab a frozen hamburger patty off it.
Megan 'Sullivan' Weidman: My Morkie (7 inches tall, 9 pounds) jumped the baby gate and ate three bowls of cat food in less than five minutes, then spent an hour puking it back up...and tried to go back for more.
Susan Blackston Fields: Dallas chewed his neuter stitches out while I was at work. Now he has to wear the cone of shame! Lol
Cynthia Barron Bunten: Chewed a big hole in a quilt I made for my daughter 10 years ago. So naughty.
Alice Linhart: My lab got into the kitchen sink and took out a wooden spoon and Tupperware containers to chew up along with raiding the recycle bin for an empty dog food can all while I was gone for three hours. This after having given her at least three huge rawhides before I left.
Ashley Bevard: Ate two sticks of butter....
Jill R Cram: Adele takes socks from the laundry basket, carries them around and sings to them like they are her kittens. Then she hides them. I am wearing mismatched socks because their mates are in hiding.

Volunteer Spotlight: Mikayla Sercye, Peter Serrot, and Andrew Hamilton
Mikayla, Peter and Andrew are some of our youngest and newest volunteers. They all are very eager to learn and help us in any way they can!
Mikayla comes to the shelter and community events with her grandmother, Ellen. Mikayla loves to spend time with our cats. She unfailingly watches our website and wants to know all the details when a new animal comes and goes.
Peter and Andrew are very intense about doing each task precisely and correctly. Peter socializes the cats, and Andrew and his mom socialize cats and walk dogs.
We had the opportunity to see all three of these awesome volunteers in action at our Chili Supper this past Saturday! Mikayla signed up people for our raffle. Peter and Andrew hung up coats, directed people, and cleared tables. Andrew helped his mom, Katherine (also a volunteer), frost brownies and serve desserts. Peter even volunteered to be part of our entertainment! (Mr. Hypnotizor told Peter he was at the beach, so he took off his shoes and rubbed on suntan lotion!)
Thank you, Mikayla, Peter, and Andrew, for making such a big difference in the lives of our shelter animals. And a heartfelt thank you to the parents, grandparents, and other adults in their lives for committing so much time and energy to support these young, enthusiastic volunteers.
We truly appreciate all of your love and compassion for our animals, and your dedication to our mission! |
Happy Tail: Gus is Lovin' Life
Gus loves his new family, and his new family loves him!
Gus loves going on walks and to the dog park to see all of the other dogs. He runs and plays fetch with other people, many times leaving his new owners in the dust. Gus loves getting treats for the new tricks that he has been taught. He also loves playing in the backyard with his sister, Midnite, also from the Cedar Valley Humane Society!
Thank you all for the care that you gave Gus during his stay at the Cedar Valley Humane Society. We are happy to call Gus our dog!
Thanks again! Adam & David Remember, YOU can send us your Happy Tail, too!
