Featured Felines:
Dude and Chloe

Dude and Chloe came to us in mid-May because their owner passed away. Both cats are very lovable. Dude is a little more laidback than Chloe. He likes to have his own spot for nap time, but if he has the option, he would rather snuggle with you. Chloe is a little more reserved than her brother, but once she knows you're willing to pet her, she comes right out of her shell. Chloe loves her lovin' and will share her space with Dude as long as you're giving them both an equal amount of attention. (You know that sibling rivalry thing....) Chloe loves to squeeze into paper bags and peek her head out. Chloe and Dude are Meow Mates, so they can both be brought home for only $90!
Compatible Canine:
Jingles

Jingles transferred into our care at the beginning of December. She is good with other dogs, but doesn't do well with cats. Jingles has a sweet and affectionate personality, but would do best in a home without small children. She is a very friendly girl and is ready for her lifelong home! Come meet this sweetie pie today!

All of us at the Cedar Valley Humane Society hope you enjoyed a wonderful holiday season, and that you and your pets are staying warm!

As we launch into 2014, I want to thank everyone who helped make 2013 a very special year for the Cedar Valley Humane Society.

We asked for your support, and you responded in countless ways: donating during our many fundraisers and events; delivering pet food, laundry detergent, and other necessities; adopting homeless animals; and volunteering your time.

The ongoing success of our mission is truly a cooperative effort that demonstrates our community's extraordinary compassion for animals.

We look forward to continuous improvement in 2014... and continuing to be a respected resource for animal welfare services in eastern Iowa.

Thank you for your unwavering support. Happy New Year!

$10,000 JANDA Matching Gift Presented

Mike Moran and his family presented the JANDA Motor Services matching gift for $10,000 at our Holiday Open House on December 8, 2013.

Supporting the Cedar Valley Humane Society is very personal for Mike Moran, owner of JANDA Motor Services. Mike adopted a dog named Dewey from us in 2010.

Adopting Dewey was a deeply satisfying experience, Mike says, adding that Dewey is a symbol of the type of lifelong friendships which result from the work the Cedar Valley Humane Society does.

A HUGE thanks to the Moran family and JANDA Motor Services for their significant contribution. And we want to thank YOU, too! It's only with YOUR generous donations that we were able to achieve the $10,000 we needed to meet the JANDA match.

Collectively, the $20,000 will go a long way toward helping the animals!

When It's Cold, our Chili is Hot!

Come enjoy a delicious meal of chili, soup, and salad, plus an array of breads and desserts at our second annual Chili Supper on Saturday, January 11!

We'll be serving it up between 5 and 8:30pm at the Prairie Hill Pavilion, on the corner of Kacena Avenue and Highway 13 in Marion.

Adult tickets are $10. Seniors are $8, and kids 10 and under are only $5. There will be no advance tickets this year, so just come on by!

This year, we will have live entertainment provided by Mr. Hypnotizor! The hour-long show starts at 8pm, and the cash bar will be open from 5 to 9pm. All proceeds benefit the Cedar Valley Humane Society.

Night at the RoughRiders

Join us on Saturday, January 18, when the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders become the Cedar Rapids Ruff!Riders. We are the charity of choice the night the RoughRiders take on the Chicago Steel. The game starts at 7pm, and there are all kinds of ways you can support our shelter animals!

Buy tickets and pack The Stable! With the purchase of a ticket in the blue or gray zone, the RoughRiders will donate up to $6 to help our animals. You must purchase the tickets online-- they will not donate any portion of the proceeds if you purchase your tickets at the box office. Our Fundraiser ID is cvhs (all lower case, no punctuation). You will receive a confirmation email, and you can pick up your tickets at the RoughRiders box office.

Be sure to say hello to our awesome volunteers who will be running an information booth in the main lobby from 5 to 7pm. Also in the main lobby, we will be accepting donations of dog and cat food. Hill's Science Diet is the preferred brand, and we can always use large rawhides. (No Milkbones, please. We have plenty!)

Don't miss the special silent auction to benefit the animals! Stay tuned for more details.

It's sure to be a great night at The Stable! So bring the kids or the cronies and get ready for some action on the ice with the Cedar Rapids Ruff!Riders!

We Asked, You Answered!

We asked icon
If your pets could make New Year's Resolutions, what would they be?

Renee Prugh: Charlie's resolution would be to learn to walk in the snow. Mommy and daddy are tired of having to carry him outside to go potty because he doesn't want to get his feet cold.

Jolene Norton: Stop trying to eat the family pet bird.

Leta Magee: Chloe would stop eating the dirty cat litter and extras!

Stephanie Shepherd: Toby would stop stealing his sister's food at dinner when I'm not looking!

Amy Croskey Casey: Hawkeye would go to the restroom if he has to fart.

Volunteer Spotlight: Chuck and Mike Johnson

Chuck and Mike Johnson have been volunteering for several years. The father-and-son team comes to clean cat condos at the shelter every Tuesday and Thursday morning. Even in nasty weather and on holidays, we can always count on them!

The duo knows each cat by name and personality. When our furry hand and pawlittle guys and gals find their lifelong homes, Chuck and Mike always want all the details.

Chuck has a contagious smile that lights up the room! Spend a few minutes talking with him, and you can't help but have a happy day. Son Mike is the quiet one-- all business and smiles. He takes gentle care of the kitties, holding, talking and petting them as he cleans.

Chuck and Mike, this world needs more loving, capable, and reliable people such as you. We are so very fortunate to have you as part of our shelter family!

Happy Tail: Merry Christmas from Toby!

Just wanted to let you know that things are going great at this new home that you found for me back in June.

There are five kids here that I love to play with, and I have a big back yard in which to play endless games of fetch! (The only thing more fun than playing fetch is playing fetch in the snow!)

I kinda had a rough start here...I'm sad to think that they almost returned me. But over the months this family has been patient with me, has given me lots of love, and, with the help of some trainers, helped me to feel comfortable with my new role as friend, companion, and member of the family. I can't imagine living with anyone else!

This has been the greatest Christmas ever!

Toby (and my family...The Pipers)

Remember, YOU can
send us your Happy Tail, too!
