Featured Feline:
Memphis

Memphis came to us in early August because his owner was moving and couldn't keep him. This big boy is a laidback couch potato. We think he would do well with a retiree who might just want to kick back and relax. He might also be a good fit for someone who works a lot and isn't home all the time. (A quiet household would be best, one way or another.) Memphis is part of our Home for the Holidays adoption special, so he can be adopted for only $25.
Compatible Canine:
Alan

Alan was returned to us at the end of November because he wasn't getting along with his new owner's cats. This big boy will need an active family and a fenced-in yard. Alan will tear off around the yard until he has run off some of his pent-up energy. When he's done, he'll lie down next to your feet with the hopes of getting a belly rub. (Alan loves to give kisses, too!) He will need a little training to learn good doggie manners. Please stop by today to meet Alan!

Time does fly when you stay busy, and 2013 certainly has been a busy year for us!

By the end of this year, we will have cared for over 1,600 animals! And we couldn't have done it without you. We have been blessed with extraordinarily engaged and generous supporters in our community... and the animals most definitely feel the love!

As this year draws to a close, we look forward to 2014 with optimism and momentum, feeling encouraged and inspired to continue our mission.

We thank you for your ongoing support. Have a very happy and safe holiday season.

Home for the Holidays Cat Adoption Special

BellaThrough December 24, we're holding a Home for the Holidays adoption special, featuring cats in our Lonely Hearts Club, Silver Paws Club, and MeowMates program. For just $25, you can bring one of these cats home for the holidays! (Two cats for $25, if they are MeowMates!)

These sweet kitties have been passed over for adoption for whatever reason--either they are a little shy at first... or they prefer not to be held... or they are a little older... or they need to go home with a feline friend so they can help each other adjust to their new environment. (Really, there are any number of reasons they might be missed by potential adopters.) All cats are spayed/neutered, vaccinated, deparasitized, and microchipped. Standard adoption processes apply.

There are more than 15 cats who qualify for our Home for the Holidays adoption special, so you have plenty to choose from! Be sure to look for the special Home for the Holidays cage cards. Come meet these wonderful companion animals today... maybe one is right for your family!

When It's Cold, our Chili is Hot!

Come enjoy a delicious meal of chili, soup, and salad, plus an array of breads and desserts at our second annual Chili Supper on Saturday, January 11!

We'll be serving it up between 5 and 8:30pm at the Prairie Hill Pavilion, on the corner of Kacena Avenue and Highway 13 in Marion.

Adult tickets are $10. Seniors are $8, and kids 10 and under are only $5. There will be no advance tickets this year, so just come on by!

This year, we will have live entertainment provided by Mr. Hypnotizor! The hour-long show starts at 8pm, and the cash bar will be open from 5 to 9pm. All proceeds benefit the Cedar Valley Humane Society.

Night at the RoughRiders

Join us on Saturday, January 18, when the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders become the Cedar Rapids Ruff!Riders. We are the charity of choice the night the RoughRiders take on the Chicago Steel. The game starts at 7pm, and there are all kinds of ways you can support our shelter animals!

Buy tickets and pack The Stable! With the purchase of a ticket in the blue or gray zone, the RoughRiders will donate up to $6 to help our animals. You must purchase the tickets online-- they will not donate any portion of the proceeds if you purchase your tickets at the box office. Our Fundraiser ID is cvhs (all lower case, no punctuation). You will receive a confirmation email, and you can pick up your tickets at the RoughRiders box office.

Be sure to say hello to our awesome volunteers who will be running an information booth in the main lobby from 5 to 7pm. Also in the main lobby, we will be accepting donations of dog and cat food. Hill's Science Diet is the preferred brand, and we can always use large rawhides. (No Milkbones, please. We have plenty!)

Don't miss the special silent auction to benefit the animals! Stay tuned for more details.

It's sure to be a great night at The Stable! So bring the kids or the cronies and get ready for some action on the ice with the Cedar Rapids Ruff!Riders!

We Asked, You Answered!

We asked icon
How are your pets reacting to (or interacting with) holiday decorations?

Cynthia Barron Bunten: Our cat knocks the ornaments off the tree, and the dog chews them up. Teamwork.

Holly Fry : Our cat climbs in the tree and knocks the ornaments off as well, but she plays with them. Now I can't find them.

Sherry Harding: Both my rescues totally knocked the tree down and redecorated the house!

Sherrie Collins: Kitties loooove climbing the tree!

Michelle Blackburn: The whole bottom half of my tree is un-decorated by my kitty cat....

Volunteer Spotlight: Emily Blake

Emily Blake has been volunteering for only a couple of months, but she jumped right in!

At the volunteer orientation, Emily hand and pawapproached us about helping with photography, since that's what she is studying. We were quick to put her to work! She has been assisting both of our  volunteer photographers by handling animals, prepping backgrounds and props, and keeping track of who has had their photo taken during the sessions. Recently she purchased her own professional camera so she can start taking photos as well!

Emily drives two hours to get to the shelter, and she really gives us her all. When she's not assisting the photographers, you can find her walking dogs or socializing cats. She also has volunteered at every event since she became involved.

Emily, we really appreciate your commitment and cheerful can-do attitude! Thanks for spending so much time helping our animals look their best for the camera, and for all the other things you do, too!

Happy Tail: Herbie and Ollie Share Special Bond

I want to share a happy story about our pets from the Cedar Valley Humane Society.

We adopted Ollie (FKA Rocky) about nine months ago. He was a puppy-mill rescue who needed a lot of TLC. He's always had severe separation anxiety, and we've been working on that. He would be anxious and have bloodshot eyes. He also would have massive accidents in the house, and he couldn't be crated when we left for fear of him hurting himself.

A few months ago, we adopted Herbert (FKA Twiggy). Like a typical kitten, he wants to be in everyone's business. We were nervous about Ollie at first, since he doesn't do well with other dogs. Much to our surprise and delight, they are buddies! They sleep in the same bed, follow each other around, and share a dish. Herbert even "pets his puppy." If I pet Ollie when Herbie is around, Herbie rubs Ollie's face with his paw.

Ollie's behavior and anxiety have improved dramatically. What a wonderful outcome! We think they have a special bond because of the matching tuxedos.

Thank you!

Carrie L.

Remember, YOU can
send us your Happy Tail, too!
