Featured Feline: Spooky
Spooky came into our care because his owner was moving and couldn't take him along. Spooky acts all independent, but we're onto him! (He really enjoys being around people and would miss you if you were gone.) Take a moment to give his chin a good, gentle scratching, and this sweet kitty is putty in your hands! Spooky also loves to press his head into your palm. (See, putty in your hands!) He is also a member of our Lonely Hearts Club, meaning he can come home with you for only $45! Come fall in love with this guy today! |
Compatible Canine: J.D.
J.D. came to us as a transfer from another shelter in mid-November. He may be small but he has plenty of energy to go around! Since he is so animated and playful we think he would be great in a family with kids. He could use some obedience training in order to polish up on some manners but, all in all, he would make a great pet! Come on out and meet J.D. today! |
Please come visit me and my friends!

Next week, we'll celebrate another Thanksgiving!
The day will center on food, family, and (for some) football, and it's tempting to feed our furry family members from our plates.
Unfortunately, human food is generally not good for our pets. Rich foods that are typical Thanksgiving fare can make pets seriously and painfully ill if eaten.
Be sure to dispose of turkey bones so that your pets cannot get to them. Not only are the bones a choking hazard, the splinters can cause gum, mouth, and digestive tract damage. And remember: absolutely no chocolate, as it can be poisonous to pets.
You can still include your pets in the day's festivities! Consider giving them their own Thanksgiving feast by treating them to high-quality canned pet food, or a Kong stuffed with peanut butter, or catnip. And afterwards, they can lounge around with the family and watch football, too!
We wish all of you a very Happy Thanksgiving, and we are thankful for your support!
Thank you!
Chuck Tourtillott Executive Director P.S. We encourage you to participate in #GivingTuesday, a national initiative to designate the Tuesday after Thanksgiving as a day of philanthropy. You can get an early start by donating now! |

We're All About #GivingTuesday!
First there was Black Friday... then Cyber Monday... now #GivingTuesday! This year, we're an official partner of #GivingTuesday, and we're helping to spread the word. #GivingTuesday (#GT) is a movement to create a national day of giving at the start of the annual holiday season. It celebrates and encourages charitable activities that support non-profit organizations. The idea is to make #GivingTuesday a part of our collective experience, much in the way that Black Friday and Cyber Monday became part of the cultural consciousness. The first Tuesday after Thanksgiving has been designated as #GivingTuesday. This year, #GivingTuesday is December 3. The success of #GivingTuesday depends on all of us! We encourage everyone to be involved with spreading the word and participating. Families and individuals are encouraged to be generous in whatever ways matter to them. We can always use monetary donations to help pay for medical supplies and procedures, like spay/neuter surgeries. If you would like to do a donation drive, please check out our wish list! |
Join us for our Holiday Open House!
We'll be serving up coffee, cookies, and other holiday yummies at our Holiday Open House on Sunday, December 8, from 2 to 5pm. Once again, award-winning caricaturist Kira Layli will be creating fun and unique caricatures throughout the event. Bring your kiddos (the two-legged and four-legged kind) and let Kira create an awesome, personalized holiday gift for your family. She can also draw from hard-copy photos if the kid-and-pet wrangling is too stressful. (Please no photographs on mobile devices, though! The small screens make it difficult to draw.) A black-and-white or color caricature will set you back just $15 per face. (Two people = $30. Two pets = $30. One pet and one person = $30.) This year, there will be a limit of one drawing per sitting. If the schedule permits, we'll be happy to let you have a second sitting. It's the feel-good event of the season...and a perfect way to pick up a one-of-a-kind gift! And if you have a little extra jingle in your pocket, you can drop some coin in our donation box. We guarantee you our shelter sweeties are on Santa's "nice" list! |
We Asked, You Answered!
So... what do your pets think of the first snowfall of the season?
Rachel Fox: It's my Yorkie's first-ever snowfall! He was confused at first, but now he loves playing outside in it!
Tiff Roberts: Our Basset puppy's first impression of it: it's cold, icky, and makes weird noise when I step on it. Not a big fan.
Nicole French: My cats were more interested in the falling and blowing leaves than the snow. However, now that the trees are bare they enjoy a better sightline to all the squirrels and birds perched on the limbs.
Kim Warburton: Letti tried to lick all the snow off the deck lol.
Kenda Hernandez: Our two furry boys LOVE IT!

Volunteer Spotlight: Gary Harrington
Gary Harrington has been volunteering at the shelter for about seven years. A certified trainer, Gary works with our shelter dogs to help with temperament and behavior issues. He also helps our staff to better understand canine body language.
In addition to all he does for our shelter dogs, he also teaches four basic dog obedience classes, and he generously donates the proceeds to the shelter. Families who adopt from us enjoy enrolling their new family member in Gary's classes. The classes also are well-attended by the community.
Gary works full time and manages to fit us in during the evenings and weekends. If you ever watch him with a high-strung or stubborn dog, you will be amazed at how he gains their attention and trust. As he always says, "They just want to please you."
Thank you, Gary, for touching the lives of so many dogs (and people)! |
Happy Tail: Chevy is Up for Adventure!
It's only been a week, but it's been a great one!
Chevy has taken well to our new home and the adventures we've put in front of him. This past weekend we took him camping with us at Lake Rathbun, and he loved the time outside exploring new territory He was very intrigued by the water and fish, which made me want to see along an update!
Brian and I have established a stable routine with the support of our good friend, Kiel. Chevy enjoys everyone he meets, humans and animals alike.
Housetraining is progressing well. Chevy is learning to notify us when he needs to go outside, and we're working on kenneling him during the day while we're both at work. Over my lunch hour and after work we enjoy runs in the backyard and taking walks around the neighborhood paths.
Chevy understands the commands "sit" and "shake" so far and has almost mastered "stay." He still gets mouthy when he's wound up, but we've been working on distracting him with a toy, putting him on his back, being patient and finding him some peers to work out his energy with. Baths are no problem after he gets dirty from being an active puppy.
There are a few things we do give in on, though. Chevy sleeps in the bed with us and likes to cuddle on the couch. He always makes sure to have one half of his body touching myself and the other touching Brian. Chevy likes to give hugs at the end of the day, too. All I can imagine is what this hug will be like when he's full grown!
We love the happiness our new addition brings to the family. I have included some photos, and I will of course send more in the future when he's reached his full grandeur! Thank you again for everything! Sincerely, Mariah M. Remember, YOU can send us your Happy Tail, too!
