Featured Feline: MiMi
MiMi came to us in mid-April because her owner didn't have enough time for her. She is a very vocal girl who will meow until she gets your attention. Mimi loves to be petted, and she will stand still to be brushed. She will climb onto your lap and will purr the whole time she is sitting with you. MiMi is a member of our Lonely Hearts Club, so she can be brought home for only $45.

Compatible Canine: Ben
Ben was transferred into our care at the beginning of August. He is a laidback dog who will go with the flow for just about anything. Playtime is an important pastime for Ben, so a game of catch or a long walk will make his day! Because of his curious personality, it is important that he has a fenced-in backyard. Please come by today to meet Ben! |

Greetings!
There are many great ways to support the Cedar Valley Humane Society and help the animals! You can adopt an animal, donate online, join our Loyal Supporters Program, sponsor a fundraising event, and donate a vehicle, to name a few.
And now there is a new way you can help, thanks to our friends at Stuff Etc. We recently established an account with this local consignment store which allows our supporters to drop off gently used clothing, appliances, furniture, and household items and donate them to our account. When the items sell, the Cedar Valley Humane Society receives a percentage of the sale.
We think this new partnership is a win-win. You can still donate your extra stuff to us, and now Stuff Etc will turn it into cash for the animals. We are proud and grateful to have your continued support. Thank you!
On behalf of the animals-

New Partnership Helps the Animals
Even though we no longer run a thrift store, you can still donate your stuff and help the animals! Our new partnership with Stuff Etc gives you a new place to bring all the great stuff you used to bring to the thrift store. (Actually, THREE new places! We have accounts in Cedar Rapids, Coralville, and Iowa City.) Just go to the closest Stuff Etc location, tell them you are consigning to the Cedar Valley Humane Society account, and they will take it from there. No appointment needed! Gently used household items, clothing, furniture, you name it! Their consignment needs change all the time. (Of course, just like our thrift store, there are some items they don't take.) So keep donating your unwanted stuff and keep helping our animals! Gather up your garage sale leftovers, clean out your closets, redesign a room...and bring your stuff to Stuff Etc!

Donate Your Car...Truck...Boat....
Donate your vehicle and get a tax deduction while helping animals at the Cedar Valley Humane Society! Our partnership with Donate for Charity allows us to convert your car, truck, SUV, motorcycle, RV, or boat with trailer into cash to help homeless animals! (It doesn't matter if the vehicle runs or not.) Donate for Charity will pick up your vehicle free of charge from your home, office, dealership or repair shop! And you do not have to be present! By donating your vehicle to the Cedar Valley Humane Society, you:
- help us further our mission to help abused, neglected, and unwanted animals in our communities.
- receive auction sales price of your vehicle as a tax deduction, or $500, whichever is the greater amount.
- avoid the possibility of receiving a low trade-in value from a dealer.
- get rid of your unwanted vehicle hassle-free!
If you have any questions about the process, you may call Donate For Charity toll-free at 1-866-392-4483 or visit www.donateforcharity.com. |
We Asked, You Answered!
Does your pet prefer to sit in your lap or be held?
Shannon Freeman Studt: Neither one of our two cats are lap cats. I've never had cats who don't want attention unless it is on their terms. lol
Sabrena Schroeder: Sit in my lap. She hates to be held and carried while you're walking.
Andrea Hilby: My Malti-Poo Tate loves to be held... like a baby. His sister, Kenna, prefers to be on my lap.
Jaclyn Keefer: My Ollie loves to be in my lap with his little head as close to my heart as it can get. My little Lucy, on the other hand, wants to lay by your feet!
Nicole Niemeier Tjelmeland: Neither. Flash's previous owner must have trained him to not get on furniture because he never tries to. He likes to sit/lay on feet though, and snuggle up next to you if you're on the floor or ground.
Barb Trujillo: Our 95-pound chocolate Lab, Duke (who came to us via CVHS), THINKS he's a lap dog. And God love him, he sure tries.

Volunteer Spotlight: Joyce Sandrock
Joyce Sandrock volunteers at the shelter, and, when the thrift store was open, she volunteered there as well.
Every week, she dons her grubbies and comes in one morning to help clean cat cages. Joyce enjoys getting to know the cats as she cleans.
Joyce also helped out at the Second Chance Thrift Store, volunteering one day a week to go in and sort donations. She is always cheerful and friendly and great to be around.
Joyce, we appreciate everything you do for us and the animals! Thank you! |
Happy Tail: Dioge's Goofy Personality Emerges
Dioge's first night home was so precious and awesome. (Glad I waited for the RIGHT DOG.) Dioge (a Seneca name meaning "grassy place") must have been in a house before. He did not totally freak out, but there are still some things that startle him. Let me back up. He rides in a car like a dream and slept all the way to Davenport. He loves our backyard. Not real excited yet about taking neighborhood walks but never pulls on his leash. He walks like a perfect gentleman. When he got in the backyard he was totally goofy, and his personality started to emerge. He lost all that blank look. So funny! He saw bunnies and was literally hopping at them. He rolled on his back in the grass and scented everything in the air and on the ground. Good to see him being so animated.
Dioge goes up and down stairs (including deck steps) like he's done that all his life. In the house is very well-mannered and does not jump on furniture. Loves to chase ice cubes around the kitchen floor! He stares at the "other dog" in the fireplace glass and oven glass. He is so-o-o gorgeous! And his heart seems so gorgeous as well, as he just looks in our eyes and almost "talks."
He slept as close to my side of the bed as he could get with his back end up against a pillow. He slept peacefully through the night. If we got up for some reason, when we went back to sleep, then he would go back to sleep. He totally understands night time. Originally we had a gate up, but he is so good in the house that he already has full run. He does not get into anything and has not "marked" his territory. Unbelievable-we were prepared for a long night, but he is just a sweetheart!
Some things still freak him out or will cause him to startle: Bill (he is not too sure about men), crinkling plastic bags (he literally runs away), and when Bill brought the newspaper in this morning he totally startled and cringed and slunk away. (I'm not even going to guess what put that in his heart.) He will need a lot of socialization as he is afraid of the neighbors in general, and we have not even tried other dogs yet, sensing that we need to be patient and go slow.
The funniest thing ever was our surround-sound speakers. He would hear a knocking on the door and look at the speaker it came from and then look very confused. He would hear an odd sound out of a different speaker and look at that speaker and cock his head from side to side. You'd have to see it-what a joy!
Can't tell you how special and privileged we feel to be his family. Thank you so much!
Nancie and Bill O.
Remember, YOU can send us your Happy Tail, too!
