Featured Feline: Vinny
Vinny came to us at the end of April due to his owner's changing lifestyle. Vinny loves to have his chin scratched, and he will move his head to make sure you get every spot. He is very social with people, but other cats...not so much. (He really wants to be your one-and-only cat!) Vinny is a member of our Lonely Hearts Club so you can adopt him for only $45.

Compatible Canine: Casey
Casey came to us as a stray at the end of May. She loves rawhides and wouldn't even put her rawhide down for the picture! Casey is truly a delightful dog with a lot of personality. She loves to play outside and soak up the sun. She does really well on a leash, but she will need some reminding on her basic commands. Stop out and meet Casey today! |

Greetings!
It's summer, and that means no leaving pets in the car while we dash into the store. It doesn't have to be a particularly hot day to create a dangerous situation for our pets.
Even during relatively comfortable temperatures, cars trap heat quickly. When it's 80 degrees outside, for example, the temperature inside a car (even with the windows slightly opened) can climb to over 100 degrees within 10 minutes. The temperature will keep rising, and as it does, your pet may suffer heat stroke or irreversible organ damage, and could die as a result.
If you see a pet in a parked car during the summer, try to find the owner. (If the car is in a big parking lot, write down the license plate number, go in and talk to management.) If you can't find the owner, call 911. You might just save a pet's life!
We wish you and your pets a safe and happy summer, and we thank you for your support!
On behalf of the animals-

Get Thrifty: Liquidation Sale
The Second Chance Thrift Store will close on August 9. "It was a difficult decision, but we believe it is in the best interest of this organization and the communities we serve," says Executive Director Chuck Tourtillott. "The thrift store received a lot of positive response from the community, but the returns didn't materialize as projected. So we decided to move forward and refocus our energies on our mission and other projects that demand our attention." The Second Chance Thrift Store will hold a liquidation sale for all remaining items, including furniture, electronics, clothing, household goods, books, DVDs and CDs. Everything in the store, excluding fixtures, will be 50 percent off marked prices. The liquidation sale will continue through August 9. Fixtures also will be offered for sale, but they cannot be picked up until after August 9. All proceeds from the liquidation sale will benefit animals at the Cedar Valley Humane Society. Unfortunately, we can no longer accept donations of thrift store items. Donations of gently used pet-related goods may still be brought to the Cedar Valley Humane Society at 7411 Mount Vernon Road SE in Cedar Rapids.

We Asked, You Answered!
How do you keep your pet cool on these hot days?
Billie Jo Udorvich-York: Mine lay on top of the air conditioner vents!
Cara Lauren: Kiddie pool!
Courtney Liebhart: Ours are inside a lot. When they are outside, there's lots of shade and a lot of water and a pool.
Diane Yeager: I keep them inside as much as possible. They always have access to a gallon bucket of fresh water that is refilled several times per day. Trips outside are limited to 10-15 minutes tops.
Julie Ensminger: Indoors only for the tame pets. We water a shaded spot in the yard so that it is cooler for the feral cats to lay on, and we add ice in their water bowls.

Volunteer Spotlight: Jackie Wallace
Jackie Wallace is a pet therapy team volunteer. Jackie takes animals to three area nursing homes to share animals with the residents.
Jackie brings her own dog or an adoptable kitten or cat to visit the residents. The residents find such joy in spending time with the animals, as many of these facilities do not allow residents to bring their animals with them when they move in.
Jackie also volunteers at another animal-based non-profit, Miracles in Motion. Jackie sees the value in animal-assisted therapy no matter what the size of the animal.
Thanks, Jackie, for taking the time to share your love of animals with others! |
Happy Tail: PJ (now Eugene) is Excellent Snuggler
We adopted Eugene--or PJ, as he was known when he stayed with you--back in January of 2011.
Eugene became an integral member of our household as soon as he walked through the door, following the lead of our older Pit mix, Chloe. There's quite an age difference between the two, but Eugene helps keeps Chloe young. And Chloe has helped make Eugene the wonderful member of our family he is today.
Eugene likes normal dog stuff, most notably going for runs, walks, and playing catch. He's an excellent snuggler, and he really, really hates thunderstorms.
Thanks for bringing us all together.
The E. Family
Remember, YOU can send us your Happy Tail, too!
