Featured Feline:
Lucy

Lucy
Lucy, I'm ho-o-o-ome! Lucy came to us in the middle of May because her owner was moving and couldn't keep her. This funny little redhead has a purr motor that just won't quit, especially when you are giving her attention! As a member of our Silver Paws Club, exclusively for animals 7+ years old, she can be adopted for only $75. Stop out and meet her today! (Hold the Vitameatavegamin, please!)

Compatible Canine:
Bo

Bo
Bo came into our care in mid-April because of his owner's changing circumstances. This big ol' boy has energy to spare! He loves to run and play with toys. (Tug might be his favorite game ever!) He has an old leg injury that didn't heal quite right. It doesn't slow him down at all, but after a big puppy playday, he might need a little something to help him with the aches. (Think doggie ibuprofen.) Bo seems to know sit and down, but other than that, he will need to be taught to be a gentleman (especially since he's so big and active). Bo absolutely loves getting attention...so get him tired, give him love, and you've got yourself a happy dog! Bo is a member of our Lonely Hearts Club which means his adoption fee is only $75!

Greetings!

Chuck and S'mores Last month, the Cedar Valley Humane Society was voted #1 by our community in the KCRG A-List contest for Best Pet Services and Best Pet Supplies.

We are very proud to be #1 on the A-List, and we want to thank everyone who cast their votes for us. However, we are not going to let this distinction lead us to complacency. Instead, we are inspired to continue to raise the bar and keep working to provide even better pet services and supplies to Eastern Iowa residents.

We encourage you to come visit us if you're looking to adopt a pet, or if you need pet supplies or animal care advice. We offer it all right here!

We hope to see you soon, and thank you again for your support.

On behalf of the animals-

P.S. We couldn't be #1 on the A-List or do all we do for the animals without you! Please take a moment to donate today!

Bring out the Best in Your Dog!

Registration for our summer Dog Obedience Classes is now open! Spring classes filled up fast, so be sure to sign up early.

The sessions begin in mid-July and run for seven weeks. The class Gary gives one-on-one time during classwill cover focus, sit, down, stay, stand, walking on a loose leash, heel, and recall. Your dog must be at least five months old with a current rabies vaccination.

Cost is $90 if you pre-register. If you wait until the first day of class to register, you'll pay $10 more... PLUS there might not be any spots available! (Each class is limited to 10 participants.) The class fee includes a Martingale training collar and a graduation certificate.

There are two sessions: Please bring the following items to your first class:
  • A copy of your dog's current shot records (must have an up-to-date rabies vaccination).
  • Treats for your dog.
  • Phone number you can be reached at in the evenings in case we need to cancel class due to bad weather.
Classes will be taught by Gary Harrington, an Animal Behavior College Certified Dog Trainer and AKC Canine Good Citizen Evaluator. Gary also is certified in Pet First Aid through the American Red Cross. This will be his seventh year teaching at the Cedar Valley Humane Society.

All proceeds benefit homeless animals at the Cedar Valley Humane Society. For more information, contact Jan Clarke at (319) 362-6288 or jan.clarke@cvhumane.org.

We Asked, You Answered!

We asked icon
What does your pet like to chase?

Laura Hartig-Lee: The broom....

Woods to Wedges: Golf balls at my driving range!

Alisha McDonald: My fabric while I am laying it down to trace a pattern/cut it out. Super convenient.

Sarah Duffy: The invisible monster on his tail!

Andrea Havlicek-Schminkey: My flashlights...he is absolutely goofy!!! (BTW, we adopted him from you guys.) He gets silly over anything that flashes light...flashlights, reflections on the ceiling or walls, little rainbows from the prisms in the window...just like a cat...it took us a bit to figure it out because he'd bark and jump at things that didn't seem to be there...hee hee, it's quite funny to see!

Rick Veenstra: Bunnies, of course. They're Beagles.

Tanya A Manternach: Definitely his tail. And balls. And ropes. And pretty much anything you will throw. All. Day. Long! Lol!!!

Volunteer Spotlight: Michelle Behnke

hand and pawMichelle Behnke is a well-rounded volunteer. She helps at adoption events, does group tours at the shelter and gives off-site presentations for schools and daycares. She even worked with a large group of young girls to create bird treats we can sell at the farmers market. Michelle and a couple other volunteers craft jewelry and other items for the farmers market, and all the proceeds help our homeless animals.

Michelle also fosters kittens. She takes on the bottle-fed kittens, feeding them every two to four hours, all day and all night, sacrificing her own sleep for their survival. THANK YOU for all your hard work, Michelle!

Happy Tail: Gus (now Louie) Fits in with New Siblings

Louie The cat pictured in the Paw Print newsletter feature on therapy pets looks like my Louie (formerly Gus) that I recently adopted.

Just wanted to let you know Louie is so sweet and loving (which you all already know). He is fitting in with his new siblings and loves to snuggle next to me in bed or on the couch.

I have three wonderful babies I adopted from your facility, and I wanted to thank everyone there for all you do. I can't imagine my life without the wonderful cats I found there.

Many thanks!

Michelle B.

Remember, YOU can
send us your Happy Tail, too!
