Featured Feline:
Bella

Bella
Bella came to us at the end of March due to her owner's lifestyle change. Bella is an independent kitty who likes to nap wherever she can squeeze into. She prefers you to introduce yourself by letting her sniff your hand and waiting for permission to pet her. She enjoys having her beautiful fur brushed on a regular basis. Bella is not very vocal, but her big, bright eyes will definitely speak to you! Because Bella is more than seven years old, she is a member of our Silver Paws Club and can be brought home for only $75.

Compatible Canine:
Henry

Henry
Henry came to us at the end of March due to a change in his owner's lifestyle. This young fellow has a lot of energy, so be prepared to exercise and play with him a lot every day! Henry is easygoing and very social--he always wants to stay close to people. This handsome boy loves everyone, and he gets along well with other dogs, too. Henry would make a great family dog, so stop in and meet him today!

Greetings!

Chuck and DukeTake your dog to the ball game!

That's right! The Cedar Valley Humane Society is teaming up with the Cedar Rapids Kernels for our Bark in the Park fundraiser and donation drive on Sunday, June 9.

You'll not only get to watch a great baseball game at Veterans Memorial Stadium, you'll get to spend a fun and unique afternoon with your dog--who probably has never seen a baseball game! Don't forget to bring a little something to donate for the homeless animals back at the shelter.

Bark in the Park is an out-of-the-ordinary way to support the animals at the Cedar Valley Humane Society. We hope to see you and your canine companion there!

P.S. Can't make it to the game but still want to support our mission? Take a moment to donate today!

Take Your Dog to the Vet!

Veterans Memorial StadiumVeterans Memorial Stadium, that is!

Bring the whole family--including the dog!--to Bark in the Park on June 9 at 2:05pm. Gates open at 1pm, and the pre-game doggie parade will be at 1:30pm, so be sure to come early!

Tickets for humans cost $7, and dog tickets are also $7. You must have one adult human per dog, and dogs must be at least six months old. For full details, including ticket ordering information, check out the ticket order packet. Proceeds from the doggie tickets will benefit the Cedar Valley Humane Society.

We will also be holding a donation drive at the ballpark that day, so be sure to check out our wish list and bring some treats or other goodies. (Don't worry about lugging enormous bags of dog or cat food--good things come in little packages, too, so pick something lightweight!) Look for our collection area inside the main gate!

Bring out the Best in Your Dog!

Registration for our summer Dog Obedience Classes is now open! Spring classes filled up fast, so be sure to sign up early.

The sessions begin in mid-July and run for seven weeks. The class Gary gives one-on-one time during classwill cover focus, sit, down, stay, stand, walking on a loose leash, heel, and recall. Your dog must be at least five months old with a current rabies vaccination.

Cost is $90 if you pre-register. If you wait until the first day of class to register, you'll pay $10 more... PLUS there might not be any spots available! (Each class is limited to 10 participants.) The class fee includes a Martingale training collar and a graduation certificate.

There are two sessions: Classes will be taught by Gary Harrington, an Animal Behavior College Certified Dog Trainer and AKC Canine Good Citizen Evaluator. Gary also is certified in Pet First Aid through the American Red Cross. This will be his seventh year teaching at the Cedar Valley Humane Society.

All proceeds benefit homeless animals at the Cedar Valley Humane Society. For more information, contact Jan Clarke at (319) 362-6288 or jan.clarke@cvhumane.org.

We Asked, You Answered!

We asked icon
What do you think is your "limit" on the number of pets you can have in your family?

Brian Ralston: Two cats and two dogs has always been our limit due to small living spaces, but once I get a bigger home (perhaps in the country), we can raise the limit!

Devin Mehaffey: Lucky is enough for us, though having a beagle buddy may be nice.

Leslie Elam: We have two dogs and two cats. My hubby is done, but I'd have a house full!

Jill R Cram: I adopt one at a time and spoil them mercilessly until the end of their days.

Megan Aguirre: I'm at my limit lol. Three kids (4, 3, 3 months), two dogs (one's only 15 weeks old), two cats and two rats. Lots to do in this house.

Jolene Norton: Three kids, two fish, one parakeet and one dog is more than enough.

Volunteer Spotlight: Karl Larsen

hand and pawKarl Larsen put in the most volunteer hours during the month of April!

Karl spent time volunteering both in the shelter working directly with the animals and at off-site events. Karl helps with volunteer orientation and the new volunteer tours. After all, who better to tell a new volunteer what volunteering is like than someone who has been there?!

In fact, since Karl starting volunteering for us in January, he has averaged 40 hours per month. Karl has helped clean cats in the mornings at the shelter and helped with adoption displays at PetSmart, the Tour For Life, and Peck's. THANK YOU for all your hard work, Karl!

Happy Tail: Marley Makes Life Brighter

Still Life with Marley I just thought I'd send a note telling you how well Marley and I are getting on. He has been such a great cat, very busy bird watching and playing with his favorite 'snake' and 'rat' toys. He's eating Science Diet and maintaining his 13 1/2 lbs.

Thank you for being such great interim parents. I was VERY impressed with how dedicated the Cedar Valley Humane Society people are to make sure the pets go to responsible homes, and the follow-up call to me.

Thank you so much for making my life brighter and happier.

Lindsay D.

Remember, YOU can
send us your Happy Tail, too!

I've always thought a hotel ought to offer optional small animals. I mean a cat to sleep on your bed at night, or a dog of some kind to act pleased when you come in. You ever notice how a hotel room feels so lifeless?
