Featured Feline:
Saki

Saki
Saki was brought to us by her owner at the end of April. She is an older girl who can be quite set in her ways. She'll let you know her opinion of you right away. (Hint: Scratching her head and chin will win you points!) Saki prefers to live in a quiet environment because loud noises sometimes startle her. As a member of our Silver Paws Club, she can be brought home for only $75.

Compatible Canine:
Callie

Callie the Bull Terrier
Callie was pregnant when she transferred into our care at the beginning of February. Her puppies have already been adopted, and now it's Callie's turn to find a lifelong home. This energetic girl is quite the busybody, but she loves to cuddle and stretch out to lie at your side. She has some manners, but she would benefit from training. Bull terriers are not for everybody, especially if this is your first dog; we are looking for someone who has breed experience so that Callie will have a successful transition and a home for life. If you're interested in meeting Callie, please call us at (319) 362-6288, as she is currently in a foster home. We would be happy to set up an appointment for you to meet her!

Greetings!

Chuck and DukeThe Cedar Valley Humane Society is very proud to have the support we receive from our community through our volunteer program.

Our volunteers are very special ambassadors, as they provide tours of our facility, help with our community outreach events, take animals for visits to schools and assisted living facilities, and perform many other functions essential to our mission.

We are very grateful for all of the dedicated and enthusiastic volunteers who are regularly engaged in helping us provide ever-better services. You are the lifeblood of our organization, and we want to thank all of you for everything you do.

On behalf of the animals-

Bark in the Park is On Deck!

Veterans Memorial StadiumBring the whole family--including the dog!--to the ballpark to watch the Cedar Rapids Kernels on June 9 at 2:05pm. Gates open at 1pm, and the pre-game doggie parade will be at 1:30pm, so be sure to come early!

Tickets for humans cost $7, and dog tickets are also $7. You must have one adult human per dog, and dogs must be at least six months old. For full details, including ticket ordering information, check out the ticket order packet. Proceeds from the doggie tickets will benefit the Cedar Valley Humane Society.

We will also be holding a donation drive at the ballpark that day, so be sure to check out our wish list and bring some treats or other goodies. (Don't worry about lugging enormous bags of dog or cat food--good things come in little packages, too, so pick something lightweight!) Look for our collection area by the main gate!

Make Your Pet Proud! Give Blood!

Bllod Drive pic only May 2013There's more than one way to save a life!

Be sure to eat before donating and bring a photo ID. If you donated somewhere after March 30, you'll have to sit this one out because you aren't eligible to donate again yet.

We Asked, You Answered!

We asked icon
Are there any words you need to spell around your furry family members, because if you actually SAY the words, they go nuts?

Carl D Bromberg: W-a-l-k and T-h-i-n-g-y, which means treat!

Stacy Quinby Reutzel: Cabin! They love to go to the cabin.

Elizabeth Carnicle: Outside, bye-bye, and park all cause extreme excitement. Bath causes attempted hiding...lol!

Pam Schmitt: Treats. But when I spell it they get excited and run and jump to the pantry.

Katrina Perdue: I not only have to spell, we have to speak foreign languages because she knows how certain words are spelled!

Tracy Marie McGee: Groomer's. She's fine with "vet" but she becomes concerned at the "g" word.

Virginia Balvanz-Krull: Squirrel, bunny and treat for dogs... and bird and treat for cats. For some reason bath has the opposite reaction from the dogs.

Lisa Blake: W-A-L-K. Or we change it up and say "stroll," "tour the neighborhood," etc.

Volunteer Spotlight: Craig Sealls

hand and pawCraig Sealls helped coordinate the One Day in May cleanup project. Craig does a lot of the handyman projects at our facility. His wife, Gretchen, is an avid volunteer, and-- as often happens-- Craig was drawn into helping our shelter with all sorts of little repairs. We want to give a big THANK YOU to Craig and the group of Marion High School students that came to spend a day giving back to their community.

If you have a group (over 16 years of age) that would like to help out the Cedar Valley Humane Society, contact Heidi Drees-White, our Director of Operations, at heidi.dreeswhite@cvhumane.org or (319) 362-6288.

Happy Tail: Smart, Vocal, Cuddly Chase Loves to Chase

Chase wtih head on lapI thought I'd give you an update on how Chase is doing.

Chase is very cuddly. He has to be touching me at all times, and if I push him out of my lap he'll compromise and just stick his head in my lap and look at me sadly. This has created many interesting situations. He is also much, much calmer than he was at the shelter.

I'm currently looking for a roommate, and he has investigated all the applicants for me without jumping on their laps. It's nothing short of a miracle. Of course he also makes sure to get as much skin contact as possible without jumping so that they get the message that he needs to be petted very badly. Unfortunately this has also made his separation anxiety difficult to deal with but we're working through it with training and the help of his vet.

Heeling is very difficult for him because there are just too many smells to explore! Oh well, if I can't get a run in we go to the dog park instead, and he does a lot of running there! Other parents at the dog park love him because his favorite game is to steal other dog's balls so that they'll chase him around. (Did you know this when you named him?) Whenever he's at the dog park, every dog leaves worn out, including him.

His two favorite things to do are smell and eat. He never just lets me eat in peace, but he's a Lab so I knew that was a stretch going into this.

His teacher says he is very smart. While most of the other dogs were still learning how to do "down" by leading with a treat he could already do it with just the command. Same with sit, stay, off, and various other things (today he did out which means "get out of the kitchen" without a treat lead, but I still had to do the hand signal). He knows to stay by the door while I'm getting us ready for a walk/errands, and to not walk out the door until I say "okay."

Chase has to snuggle no matter what! But enough of my not-so-subtle bragging. Chase's premier flaw that has been revealed to me since his adoption is he is highly vocal. He barks, yes, but only for a little while. What is infinitely more annoying is his sighs. If he thinks I haven't been paying enough attention to him he gives out a loud vocal sigh. If I take out my computer he gives out a loud vocal sigh. If I get up too early in the morning there is a super loud sigh! If I poke him while sleeping just to bother him - you guessed it - sigh. He is a bit judgmental for a Lab, but I digress.

He also groans loudly if you rub his ears, or sometimes when he poops (which is incredibly odd and entertaining). Or if he's scratching, and you take over scratching the spot. And sometimes he groans or whines in his sleep (while thrashing around violently) which makes me think he must have very interesting dreams. He does not sleep on my side of the bed....

Anyway, thus far Chase and I are having lots of fun! He sends his love, and wants you to know how mean I was that I didn't warn him the doughnut he ate out of my hand today as I was bringing it to my mouth would make his belly upset. Hope all the animals there find wonderful homes.

Best wishes,

Janielle R.

The dog's agenda is simple, fathomable, overt: I want. "I want to go out, come in, eat something, lie here, play with that, kiss you. There are no ulterior motives with a dog, no mind games, no second-guessing, no complicated negotiations or bargains, and no guilt trips or grudges if a request is denied."
