Featured Feline: Bones
Bones was brought to us by her owner at the beginning of April because of the family's changing circumstances. Even though Bones is in our Silver Paws Club, which is exclusively for animals 7+ years old, she still has lots of energy and a playful attitude. She loves toy mice and will hide them anywhere and everywhere! Since Bones is an older cat, her adoption fee is only $75. Stop out and meet this happy-go-lucky girl!

Compatible Canine: Persey
Persey was returned to us at the beginning of April because his owner had unrealistic expectations. Persey is a young boy with a lot of puppy in him. (Think: Lots of energy to burn!) He will need you to help establish a routine for him, so that he knows what your expectations are. Persey will thrive with a little basic training, plus plenty of positive reinforcement when he's being a good boy! He's a smart dog, and we think he knows a few commands, but he's at that age where he needs to learn to focus his energy. If you're up for it, Persey will be your best bud!

Greetings!
Part of the Cedar Valley Humane Society's mission is to build healthy relationships between people and animals.
One fun, meaningful way we engage the community in our mission is by providing pet-related educational opportunities.
This spring and summer, volunteer certified trainer Gary Harrington is teaching dog obedience classes at our shelter. Gary has been partnering with us in this way for seven years, and we are very excited to welcome him back.
In May, Vicky DiBona will offer her popular pet first aid class, which will be hosted by our wonderful friends at Pawsitive Paws Academy. In addition to teaching techniques that could save your pet's life, Vicky will cover disaster preparedness guidelines, so that you and your pet can stand ready if catastrophe strikes.
We want to thank Gary and Vicky for helping us further our mission by sharing their valuable expertise with the members of our communities. And, of course, we would like to thank you for your ongoing support!
On behalf of the animals-

Connecting with Community: Pet Therapy
Strengthening the human/animal bond is part of our mission, and our volunteers play a huge role in making that a reality. We provide pet therapy to a dozen retirement residences, businesses, and colleges in the Cedar Rapids area. For folks in retirement residences who can't get around like they used to, it's a time of quiet joy and a bright spot in their day. For local college students, it's a great way to decompress during finals. For area employees, interacting with a dog or cat helps ease daily stress. Bringing community members and shelter animals together is one of the most rewarding experiences our volunteers can have! (Plus, hanging out with a variety of people in unfamiliar surroundings is great for the shelter animals!) To our dedicated volunteers who spread such joy throughout our communities, we offer a heartfelt THANK YOU! If you are not currently a volunteer, but providing pet therapy sounds like something you would like to commit to, please let us know. You would be enriching the lives of community members, shelter animals, and, yes, your own life as well. |
Get Thrifty: Bring On Spring!
Spring is right around the corner (really, it is!) and it's time to load up on T-shirts! The Second Chance Thrift Store has T-shirts in all sizes and colors for only $1. (Yep, a buck!) Yardwork, washing the car, playing frisbee with the dog...there are all kinds of activities where wearing a T-shirt is mandatory! And right now, you can buy three, and get one FREE! (That extra one would be good for sleeping in!) So... get thrifty and feel good about it! Because all proceeds from the Second Chance Thrift Store benefit the homeless animals at the Cedar Valley Humane Society. |
We Asked, You Answered!
You've done something your pet doesn't like and now (s)he's sulking. What does your pet do to show his or her opinion of you?
Jeni Hartford: Dirty, dirty looks!
Rose Kern Dougan: When we put our 70-pound boxer/beagle mix in his room which has a half wall, he will pout and refuse treats.
Leslie Elam: He sits behind my husband's legs and peeks out at me. Cracks me up!
Millie Freelin-Stanfield: She makes sure you're looking, then turns her back at you!
Debbie Marlin Leonard: She barks at me!!! I believe she truly thinks she can talk.
Derek Ross: She will go get a sock and bring it to me. Apparently socks make everything better!

Volunteer Spotlight: Gary Harrington
Certified trainer Gary Harrington has contributed countless hours to the animals in our care over the past seven years. He volunteers several evenings a week to provide basic training for our shelter dogs. Gary's patient, consistent, and positive training methods make a huge difference in their lives!
In addition, Gary teaches four basic dog obedience classes to the public each year, and he donates all proceeds from the classes to the shelter. Gary, we give you a hearty-- but well-mannered!-- "WOOF!" for sharing so much of your time and talents with our shelter dogs and the community-at-large. |
Happy Tail: Eager-to-Please Emmy Fits in with the Pack
We are loving having Emmy as part of our family! She is sweet, eager to please, and just fits with our dogs and our family so well!
Emmy enjoys taking walks when the sidewalks are dry, and is so good on a leash. She loves new smells and just being outside. Hanging out in the backyard is another favorite pastime, although cold weather is NOT her friend! She loves rawhides after supper, cuddling with a person on the couch, and sleeping with us at night right by my side. Thank you so much for the service you provide to so many communities!
The Petersens and the Pack
Emmy, Simba, and Naya
Remember, YOU can send us your Happy Tail, too!
