Featured Feline:
Gus

Gus
This handsome lad transferred into our care in early March. Gus is a very sweet boy who loves people and is great with other cats, but he is a little unsure about dogs. Gus is very affectionate and enjoys having his head and ears rubbed, and if you try to stop petting him, he will nudge you to keep on going. Come give this loverboy some affection today!

Compatible Canine:
Grace

Grace
Grace came to us as a stray in mid-March. This sweetheart loves people and will greet each one with the touch of her nose. Grace is healing well from minor surgery to remove masses on her side, and now she is feeling almost like new! When she gets excited, her whole body wiggles! She can be a little bossy around other dogs, so it would be best if she were the only animal in the home. As a member of our Silver Paws Club, exclusively for animals more than seven years old, Grace can be adopted for only $100.

Greetings!

Bob and CoffeeAt the Cedar Valley Humane Society, we believe that experiencing the human-animal bond is one of life's greatest gifts. It is truly remarkable how we as humans can develop special, loving relationships with other species.

There are many ways humans bond and interact with pets, and the Cedar Valley Humane Society is a resource for information and programs that help you explore these relationships and keep your pets healthy, safe, and happy.

For example, our upcoming dog obedience classes offer a wonderful bonding experience for you and your dog. You will both learn, have fun, and, in the end, you'll take home some simple and positive training tips that will encourage your dog to be a well-mannered family member. These practical, everyday skills will make life with your canine companion even more enjoyable.

Bring Out the Best in Your Dog!

Our Dog Obedience Training Classes begin at the end of April and run for seven weeks. The class will cover focus, sit, down, stay, Gary gives one-on-one time during classstand, walking on a loose leash, heel, and recall. Your dog must be at least five months old with a current rabies vaccination.

Cost is $90 if you pre-register. If you wait until the first day of class to register, you'll pay $10 more. The class fee includes a Martingale training collar and a graduation certificate. We highly encourage pre-registration because each session is limited to 10 participants.

There are two sessions: Please bring the following items to your first class:
  • A copy of your dog's current shot records (must have an up-to-date rabies vaccination).
  • Treats for your dog.
  • Phone number you can be reached at in the evenings in case we need to cancel class due to bad weather.
Classes will be taught by Gary Harrington, an Animal Behavior College Certified Dog Trainer and AKC Canine Good Citizen Evaluator. Gary also is certified in Pet First Aid through the American Red Cross. This will be his seventh year teaching at the Cedar Valley Humane Society.

All proceeds benefit homeless animals at the Cedar Valley Humane Society. For more information, contact Jan Clarke at (319) 362-6288 or jan.clarke@cvhumane.org.

We asked icon
How have your pets reacted to the warmer weather?

Bryan Giblin: Lovin' it, of course!

Rose Kern Dougan: They stay outside longer...as long as there aren't any neighbors to bark at.

Nicole French: My cats LOVE sitting in the open windows watching the birds and squirrels and keeping their sniffers in the air!

Patty Soukup: Spot needs a revolving door. In out In out In out.

Debbie Heaton: The cats are really liking the windows being opened. Soon I can take them out in their pet stroller.

Volunteer Spotlight: Sara Crane

hand and pawSara Crane has been volunteering for two months and has already been helping in several different ways!

Sara comes in a couple days each month to bathe dogs, so they will be super-clean and spiffy when they meet potential adopters. Sara also walks the dogs, keeping them happy while they are waiting for their new families to come along. Sometimes she even helps clean kennels, too! Sara, way to jump right in and become part of the Cedar Valley Humane Society family! We appreciate your efforts, time, and commitment to our K9s!

Happy Tail: Curious Caesar Snoops in Boxes

Caesar in a boxCaesar loves looking at the birds out the window of his new home. He is very curious! You will often find him snooping around in random places, such as boxes.

On the very first day at the apartment, Caesar made himself comfortable on the couch. He definitely adjusted to the change quickly and we couldn't have picked a better kitty for our place!
