Featured Feline: Little Kitty
Little Kitty came to us at the beginning of October because her owner was allergic. Little Kitty is a very loving gal who enjoys sitting on laps. As an older cat, she prefers sleepy Sundays to chasing around silly things like laser lights and fuzzy mice. (She'll leave that business to the younger set.) She does enjoy a good brushing, though, and she's front declawed. She is a member of our Silver Paws Club and has a new special adoption fee of only $35.

Compatible Canine: Randie
Randie came to us as a stray towards the end of January. She is a very curious girl who likes to explore her surroundings. With her calm temperament and mellow personality, we think she would make a great family dog. Randie enjoys being petted and would love to be able to show you some lovin' too! As a member of our Lonely Hearts Club, Randie can be adopted for only $75! |

Greetings!
As winter (hopefully) draws to a close, the Cedar Valley Humane Society is preparing for our busy season--the warmer months when more animals are out and about.
During this time, we see more strays and more young animals, especially kittens, enter our shelter. It's a time when the community relies heavily on us to be available to help animals that need care and shelter; help people find their lost pets; and help those who are looking to add a companion animal to their families through our adoption program.
We are proud to be here for you, and we are honored to earn your support. Your donations enable us to continue our services both for animals and people. If you have donated to us recently we are grateful, and we hope that you will come visit us at both our animal shelter and our thrift store. Thank you again, and we hope to see you soon.
On behalf of the animals-

Bring Out the Best in Your Dog!
Our Dog Obedience Training Classes begin at the end of April and run for seven weeks. The class will cover focus, sit, down, stay, stand, walking on a loose leash, heel, and recall. Your dog must be at least five months old with a current rabies vaccination. Cost is $90 if you pre-register. If you wait until the first day of class to register, you'll pay $10 more. The class fee includes a Martingale training collar and a graduation certificate. We highly encourage pre-registration because each session is limited to 10 participants. There are two sessions:
Please bring the following items to your first class:
- A copy of your dog's current shot records (must have an up-to-date rabies vaccination).
- Treats for your dog.
- Phone number you can be reached at in the evenings in case we need to cancel class due to bad weather.
Classes will be taught by Gary Harrington, an Animal Behavior College Certified Dog Trainer and AKC Canine Good Citizen Evaluator. Gary also is certified in Pet First Aid through the American Red Cross. This will be his seventh year teaching at the Cedar Valley Humane Society. All proceeds benefit homeless animals at the Cedar Valley Humane Society. For more information, contact Jan Clarke at (319) 362-6288 or jan.clarke@cvhumane.org. |

We Asked, You Answered!
What household item or sound gets the biggest reaction (good or bad) from your pet?
Crystal Ellis: The neighbors closing their car doors!! He thinks it's someone trying to come in and freaks out. lol
Mike Coleman: Doorbell, hands down for one dog. Hot air popcorn popper for the other....
Rene Morris: "Daddy's home!" I swear our dog hears that and he flies...he's half reindeer! Gets VERY excited!
Channelle Nichole Clela: The drawer with the laser light. When we open it, all three dogs' noses drop straight to the floor. Even if they are not in the room, they know the sound of the drawer.
Diane Yeager: The hated (and evil) vacuum. Always good for a few barks from the dogs and swats/hisses from the cats!
Rachel Schlotfelt: When I crumple up a piece of paper to throw it away my cat flips out. It is his favorite play toy.
Kimberly Lynn Proctor: Our puppy goes nuts when my son practices his trombone!
Mike McCain: The words "There's Mr. Squirrel" get a happy response. They want to go outside and play with it.

Volunteer Spotlight: Ken and Deb Allers
Ken and Deb Allers are truly outstanding volunteers!
Ken helped write our New Volunteer Orientation packet. He assists at volunteer orientations, special events, and school visits. He also walks dogs. One day when Ken came to walk the dogs, he brought his wife, Deb, with him. Deb enjoyed it so much, she became a volunteer, too. Now Deb helps with dog walking, orientations, and events, too.
Ken and Deb both spoke to students in the STEPS program at Mount Mercy University. Their kind words about volunteering at the shelter helped recruit several Mount Mercy students to volunteer. Ken and Deb are wonderful, both individually and as a team. They both have warm personalities and we are very lucky they've decided to give us some of their spare time.
Thank you, Ken and Deb, for all of your time, love, and commitment to our cause. We appreciate it, and the animals do, too... especially the dogs! |
Happy Tail: Lucky is One Lucky Dog
Thank you so much for helping us save Lucky's life.
When we first found her drowning, afraid and alone, we had no idea that we needed her just as much as she needed us. Thank you for making our family whole.
The M. Family
Remember, YOU can send us your Happy Tail, too!
