Featured Feline: Tennille
Tennille has extremely soft fur, and it's the brightest black and orange fur you've ever seen! Tennille came into our care as a stray in mid-November. She is a very loving girl who wants to be petted constantly. She enjoys being brushed, but she would rather be petted -- with both hands, please! She has a curled ear, which just adds character to her lovely looks.

Compatible Canine: Hannah
Hannah was brought to us by her owner in mid-January. When Hannah was a puppy, she broke her leg; the break was so bad that the leg had to be amputated. (She doesn't let that slow her down, though!) Hannah is a little shy of children because their sudden movements startle her. She loves Denta-sticks and chew toys. (She goes through chew toys in no time flat, so be sure to have plenty of backup toys.) This sweet girl loves to have big blankets, so she can curl up in her own fluffy bed. |

Greetings!
I have experienced many winters in Colorado and Montana, and as I spend my first winter in Iowa, I am discovering that it has its own unique "brand of cold"!
During the winter months, it's important to pay close attention to your pets to keep them safe and healthy. Prevent dehydration by making sure your pets always have plenty of water available. Wipe your dogs' feet when they come inside to remove snow and ice-melting products which can cause irritation. Be sure to keep your cats inside and provide them with a warm, non-drafty place to sleep.
Please contact us if you would like to learn more about pet care in the winter months. As always, we are grateful for your support.
On behalf of the animals-

Seeking Whine & Wags Auction Supporters!
Of course we want you to attend the Whine & Wags Auction, but there are three ways you can support the event before the big night! Underwriting is a great way to get involved in Whine & Wags. Underwriting donations help pay the costs of the event and allow the money raised through ticket and auction sales to go directly to helping the animals. Underwriting includes two complimentary tickets to the event. There are several levels at which you can participate, from $150 to $3,000+. We're always looking for new fun and exciting auction items. Donating items is a great way to help the animals! Items can be pet-oriented, but they don't have to be. (Some of our biggest draws are sports-related, like Hawkeye tickets and autographed memorabilia.) Donated items are tax deductible, and your generosity will be acknowledged in the auction program if you would like. You can also advertise your business in the auction program. The cost for promoting your business is very reasonable, from $100 for a quarter page ad to $300 for a full page. It's a great way to reach pet lovers who support our cause! We would like to have all the donations locked in by February 8, so don't delay! To learn more, contact Bernie Lettington at bernie.lettington@cvhumane.org. With your help, Whine & Wags 2013 will be more successful than ever! |
We Asked, You Answered!
How did your pet get his or her name?
Nolan Winans: After I picked him up at the Cedar Valley Humane Society, 14.5 years ago, I named him Cosmo, after my favorite Seinfeld character.
Terri Jo Walter: I call my kitty "Boo" because she's pretty shy and hides from people (not me, though). I've kept her CVHS name "Angelina" as her formal name. Such a good kitty!
Leila Hennessey: We got Pete from CVHS on April 17,1996 as 7 week old kitten. My husband named him Pistol Pete because he raced through the house like a speeding bullet. My son named him Little Bo-Pete because he was so tiny and sweet. Officially, he is Pistol Pete, but he is my little beau Pete.
Becky Stockel: My cats, Tinker and Chance, were named after World Series-era (lol, tear) Cubs greats Joe Tinker and Frank Chance. One day I may consider adopting an Evers to round out the historic double-play team, but for now I have to cover 2B when we play base-mice.
Michelle Miers McIllece: Our Orange Cat is a rescued stray. His name started as a descriptor, as in "That orange cat is back, can you feed him?" By the time we rescued him that was the name he knew so it stuck. It fits him - a doofy name for a doofy cat!
Mary Nelson: Our three cats are named after Egyptian goddesses. Our black cat, Eris, is the goddess of chaos and discord. Our tortie cat is named Karma (no explanation needed), and our kitten is named Calypso, which is fitting because she loves water and is fascinated by it. (She was known as Saturday at CVHS.)
Dave Paris: My dog is named "Tralfaz" after the dog on the Jetsons. There was an episode where a millionaire came to the Jetsons and said their dog Astro actually first belonged to him, and the dog was originally named TRALFAZ. So I figured that must be what rich people name their dogs.

Volunteer Spotlight: Noel Wilbur
Noel Wilbur has really stepped up to the plate!
Noel has familiarized himself with Volgistics, the new website our volunteers use to schedule and track their time. Noel wrote the entire training piece for the other volunteers. It was a hit!
Noel has been volunteering for years--he usually splits his time between helping at fundraisers and adoption events and walking shelter dogs. Hats off to Noel for helping us take our volunteer program to the next level! |
Happy Tail: Opey Doesn't Like to Brag, but...
Hi! Remember me? I'm Opey.
On October 3, my mom came to the Cedar Valley Humane Society to see a cat she saw online. While she looked at other cats, I kept talking and talking to her from my cage. WOW... she finally heard me and came to my cage. I don't like to brag, but she said she couldn't have left there without me. (I really adopted her, but she doesn't know that. Shhh!!)
I have a lot of toys, many places where I can sleep, fresh food and water, and many, many hugs. Mom and Grandpa lost their cat Louie in August 2012 and said the house was very lonely and too quiet. I am happy here, and now the house is full of laughter and love.
Mom said she never had a cat who talked and had facial expressions like me. Thank you for your care and your love until I found my forever home! Happy 2013!
Love,
Opey
Remember, YOU can send us your Happy Tail, too!
