Featured Feline: Zorro
Zorro came to us as a stray at the end of September. This magnificent boy truly lives up to his name! Zorro really is a larger-than-life character. He will seduce you with his charms. (Hey, everyone needs a good snuggle now and then!) Zorro will investigate anything he thinks is out of place...and if he thinks it might get him, he will pounce on it! (Take that, dastardly fuzzy mouse!) Zorro does well with other cats and would make a great addition to any household. He is a member of our Lonely Hearts Club, so he can be adopted for only $45. Come meet this legendary cat today!

Compatible Canine: Diego
Diego came to us in the middle of March as a stray. Most recently, he was returned to us because he was just too much dog for his new owner. Diego is a big, active boy with a lot of energy. Diego would love to spend the afternoon in the backyard or go for long walks at the park. He is up for anything, just as long as he is part of the action! If there are children in the home, we recommend they be at least 12 years old, since Diego is a rambunctious boy who sometimes doesn't know his own strength. |

Warm Up at our Chili Supper Fundraiser
Come on by for a delicious hot bowl of chili, cornbread, baked potatoes, and all the fixin's! It's our first annual Chili Supper Fundraiser, Saturday, January 12, from 4-7pm at the Bertram Township Hall. We'll have three different kinds of chili...eat it at the hall or take it home! Bring some extra cash so you can buy into the 50/50 raffle. (The more people who play, the more money you could win!) There will also be cool door prizes! Representatives from Scentsy, Thirty One gifts, Tupperware, and Origami Owl will be on hand, and a portion of the sales will be donated to help the animals at the Cedar Valley Humane Society. Purchase your tickets in advance, and here's what you'll pay: Adult tickets are $6. Seniors (60+) are $4. Children age 4-12 are $3, and kids 3 and under are free! If you wait and buy your tickets at the door, you'll pay a buck more. (Okay, kids 3 and under will still be free.) You may also register by stopping by the shelter at 7411 Mount Vernon Road SE or by calling (319) 362-6288. Pre-registration will close at 3pm on Friday, January 11, so don't delay! |

Ramping Up for Whine & Wags
We know...we know... it seems a long way off, but Whine & Wags will be here before you know it! We are currently seeking individuals, business owners, and corporate underwriters who would like to contribute to our largest fundraiser of the year! Underwriting is a great way to get involved in Whine & Wags. Underwriting donations help pay the costs of the event and allow the money raised through ticket and auction sales to go directly to helping the animals. Underwriting includes two complimentary tickets to the event. There are several levels at which you can participate, from $150 to $3,000+. We're always looking for new fun and exciting auction items. Donating items is a great way to help the animals! Items can be pet-oriented, but they don't have to be. (Some of our biggest draws are sports-related, like Hawkeye tickets and autographed memorabilia.) Donated items are tax deductible, and your generosity will be acknowledged in the auction program if you would like. You can also advertise your business in the auction program. The cost for promoting your business is very reasonable, from $100 for a quarter page ad to $300 for a full page. It's a great way to reach pet lovers who support our cause! Volunteering is a wonderful way to become involved! It takes a lot of work to plan and produce Whine & Wags each year, and we can always use help gathering auction items, setting up the auction display, greeting and registering guests, monitoring the auction table, and more! To learn more about underwriting, donating items, or advertising in the program, contact Bernie Lettington at bernie.lettington@cvhumane.org. To find out how you can volunteer, contact our volunteer coordinator, Wendy El-Hussein, at wendy.elhussein@cvhumane.org. With your help, Whine & Wags 2013 will be more successful than ever! |

We Asked, You Answered!
If your pet could make a New Year's resolution, what would it be?
Brekka Walker: Be more calm and learn how to handle her anxiety better.
Kristin Neal: To stop her addiction of licking her sister's ears...oh, and to stop losing her tennis balls under the furniture.
Nikki Kuehl: Several of mine need weight loss...although they don't agree.
Rachel Jackson: Perfect their begging technique so their parents give in when eating meals.
Melissa Caldemeyer Guyer: Izzy says he's gonna try really hard to stop eating his poop! I'm rooting him on and being very supportive.
Montelle W: Hopefully, less flatulence.

Volunteer Spotlight: Joyce Sandrock
Joyce Sandrock recently joined our volunteer squad! Joyce keeps our cats happy and healthy by helping clean adoption rooms in the morning and giving the kitties a little extra TLC.
She also stops in at the Second Chance Thrift Store to help sort donations, assist customers, set out merchandise, and more! Joyce is very consistent and dependable... when she says she will be there, she's there! Thank you so much, Joyce, for being someone we can truly count on. You are a tremendous volunteer! |
Happy Tail: Seniors Beans and Pepper: Big Personalities, Big Laughs
Though I've only had these two for seven short months, I can't imagine life without Beans and Pepper. I'll never forget the day I first saw them at the shelter--Pepper was sleeping and Beans was trying to get as much attention as possible (which I now know is normal for both of them). I saw a lot of people walk up to their cage, make a remark about how beautiful they were, but walk away once they saw Beans and Peppy were eleven years old. Once I got to hold them, I fell in love--I'm so happy I got to take them home!
My husband and I pamper these guys to death. They're our babies, and we can't believe what great cats Beans and Pepper have turned out to be. Even our veterinarian thinks they're wonderful, healthy boys that look and act much younger than they really are! They have such big personalities, and it's hilarious just watching them play around with each other.
I'd like to mention a few of the laughs my husband and I get out of Beans and Pepper.
Pepper likes to drink out of faucets and play in the water. He helps me get ready in the morning by biting sticks of mascara or eyeliner out of my makeup bag, and dropping them in front of me. He also enjoys munching on my hair ties when he finds them on the counter and loves to bite and play with my pencil while I'm trying to use it to do homework. He gives lots of kisses and loves to be held.
Beans likes to "California roll" on the ground until someone pets him. He loves to chase flies, and he goes berserk over toys that make noise. He is very majestic. We think he thinks he is our guard dog--he always investigates sounds, like he is looking for intruders. He loves snuggling with his brother, and he even snuggles with Mom and Dad. He especially loves his daddy and follows him around whenever he is home.
When we adopted them, we were told Siamese cats get protective and jealous of their things--its true! They totally get jealous of each other over the silliest things, so we have to make sure we get each of them the same exact toy whenever we bring one home and give them the same number of treats so no one feels left out. They're hilarious!
They may be "seniors," but they're the most amazing cats I've ever known! We're so glad we adopted both of them; they are the perfect addition to our little family! We love them so much, and are so thankful the Cedar Valley Humane Society took them in so we had the opportunity to give them a forever home!
Love,
Paul and Andrea W.
Remember, YOU can send us your Happy Tail, too!
